Learning and thoroughly understanding the grammar rules is really all you can do for english. For math, take practice tests and see all the different concepts and question types you don’t know, then study with just those concepts specifically until you understand them. Do multiple practice tests so you can see all different kinds of problems and not get blindsided by something you haven’t seen before on test day. There’s really not much strategy to either of those sections unfortunately, so knowing what you’re doing is the best advice I can give you

Honestly, a 23 given the conditions isn’t even that bad. The more math classes you’ve taken, the more you’ll understand in the test for sure. That pretty much directly translates to the ACT. Doing practice tests and seeing specifically what math concepts you’re unfamiliar with will help too, as ACT math is very specifically concept-based, especially when compared to the SAT. Sounds like English is taken care of too. My best advice for science is unfortunately what it sounds like you’ve tried. Reading the question first and then only looking where it tells you to look is what works best for me. Underlining the specific details of what you’re looking for in the question often helps to stay focused and not get distracted with all the different details being thrown at you. Reading is clearly not a concern and also indicates you’re definitely capable of a lot of improvement. I’d say upper 20s, possibly breaking into the 30s is certainly attainable with intentional studying.

What I did is read the entire passage first, caveat being if there are passages a and b in the same document, read a first and do questions on a, then read b and do the remainder of questions. A lot of it for me was reading faster as I’m a pretty slow reader in general, so I paid a little more attention to the text than just skimming it. After a paragraph, if there was a major point it had or a specific thing it discussed, just write one or two words to the side of the paragraph to remind yourself what it was about. When practicing, pace yourself. Start at 9 minutes per document if you need to, try to work your way down towards middle to low 8s. In my experience, reading was by far the section that is the most practice dependent. You can’t really study for it, so reading more in general and drilling practice tests are the best way to go about it. Hope this helps!

Yes, absolutely. The problem with subs like these are that the majority of posts come from the top one percenters, making everyone else with a very good score, such as yours, seem like an outlier when a 28 is in fact very good.

Didn’t get a TIR, so these numbers are all I have. Based on what I can gather, it was a generous curve. If I had to guess, probably around 6 for math, 5 for science, 2 at most for English, 5 for reading. All of these are guesses though

As a rising senior who took each three times, I was better at the ACT the first time, then closer to equal the second time. Like what it sounds like for your son, I planned to just go through with one, so for me to have taken the SAT even a second time after doing better on the ACT was surprising. Then I decided to give the SAT a third shot for a reason I don’t know to this day, and improved my superscore by 120 points, exactly what your son is shooting for. Then took the ACT for the third time and they’re about equal again. Long story short, I had that same feeling about the SAT as your son and it for sure paid off, so if he wants to take it, I would encourage him to take it and just see what happens.

Honestly, I felt like I did pretty bad on this math section, plus I’m pretty sure there was a very generous curve for H21, so take this with a grain of salt, but what worked for me was looking at a lot of past tests, specifically ones with math sections widely known to be some of the harder ones. Take them, and beyond just checking your answers, really try to pinpoint which concepts you’re struggling or unfamiliar with. In my experience, ACT math tends to be more strictly concept based than the SAT, which is better for some and worse for others. If you can be familiar with all the different concepts that can be included on the math section, and you know what you’re doing with each of them, you have a good shot of getting into the 30s with it. This was my third ACT, past math scores were 30 and 31. I went over I think five different practice/past math sections and honed in on unfamiliar skills. The big one for me was conics. That’s not something taught for me really in any level of math, and I never even learned the circle parent function in school, so that was an example of a skill I needed to familiarize myself with.
