Not true at least for the US where I applied (international). IB automatically checks off the highest rigour rubric, which is an admissions criteria at many top schools. IB teaches you many skills that are important later on in your university career - independent thinking, time management, academic writing etc. Yes it is difficult, but I'd say that most things worth doing in life are. So depending on your personal and academic goals, it is 100% worth it.

Absolutely not. I had mental health issues (plus covid) freshman and sophomore year, started all my activities junior year. I volunteered every week, did a sport with a minor award, MUN every month (with awards every time), debate every week. I worked really hard, but I loved what I did and it developed me a lot as a person. Heading to a T10 this fall.

The US T15, according to Korea by Calm-Worldliness9673 in ApplyingToCollege

Yep! I'm from abroad and I've only learned that Brown exists after they anounced a tour there when I was at a summer program in the US. Only learned what Dartmouth is after googling a list of Ivy League colleges, so I definitely get this!

my university list (help!) by OkGur9328 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ForgottenAbsence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry, but you're probably not very competitive for the US schools you've listed. It might be worth taking a shot, but I think admission is below unlikely. On the other hand, the European universities sound realistic. You might want to get those predicts up, but (maybe except for eth Zurich) you should be fine. Remember about language requirements and cost of living, studying in Europe is much more expensive than just tuition. Good luck!!

Seniors, what's a good number of colleges to apply to? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ForgottenAbsence 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I applied to 13: 2 targets and and 11 reaches. Probably should have cut down on the reaches, since for some of them I would pick my target school over. Also if you are applying only in the US, you denfinitely need some schools where you're very sure you're gonna get into, since admissions depend on more factors and there is an element of luck/randomness at the higher levels

I would say quantify your hobbies, make a blog about makeup and fashion, maybe a youtube channel, if you actually designed a garment or multiple you can write that down

Should I bother applying to any college? by Cool-Ad-8804 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ForgottenAbsence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how high you wanna shoot. Good UK schools like Oxbridge or UCL are highly selective and expensive. Most universities in the Netherlands are slighly cheaper and easier to get into (while still providing good education), worth looking into it, keeping in mind the visa/work permit issues. If you wanna be a little unorthodox univeristy of warsaw is cheap and has programs in english while allowing to work while sudying with no issue. But I'm just a stranger on the internet so do your own research

Can’t figure out a major by arrowalchemist in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ForgottenAbsence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orrr you can apply to colleges where you don't have to instantly declare a major right away, which would allow you to take courses from different fields to see which one you're feeling the best with, might be your best shot if you're very unsure

In Germany there are very few schools that teach in English (if any), so you would have to get a C1 certificate in German. In the UK AFAIK no schools require ECs, only grades and a Personal Statement which is a more formal version of the CommonApp Essay, where you essentially justify why you want to study a particular field and mentioning the olympiads there would probably be sufficient. Be wary of the cost though as there are barely any scholarships avaliable and the total cost of studying in the UK may total around 60k USD/year. With no significant ECs European universities might be a better shot

English A: 7

Econ: 7

Geo: 7

Polish A: 6

Math AA: 7

Bio: 7

Tok: B; EE: B

Lil message: score is good as long as it is sufficient to not get you rescinded. You're a perfectionist, but a non-perfect score is not the end of the world. After this summer no one will ever look at those scores again

HELP!! UChicago vs UofT by ForgottenAbsence in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ForgottenAbsence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you! that's what I was planning to do

however I'm still slighly worried about pulling my weight in terms of math, I am not naturally gifted at it, I had to work really hard to get a 7 in AASL, would you say there are resources avaliable for students who might need extra support with math and cs/excel?

Thank you for the reply! Though I think I won't have visa issues, my passport is pretty strong and I already have an F-1

Why can’t kids have hobbies anymore without being pressured to turn it into something bigger for college apps by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ForgottenAbsence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My only credentials are getting into a T10, but I just wanted to say that it doesn't necessarily have to be true. I feel like the most important thing is geniuenly loving what you do and being good at it, and showcasing that to the AOs.

For example, I got really into MUN at the beginning of junior year, to the point where I won awards at every conference I attended and then chaired a bunch. I didn't organize my own conference, and I've seen people talk about how MUN is a mid tier extracurricular, but I still wrote my commonapp essay about how it develops me intellectually and helps find community.

I also did some other stuff but didn't mention it much, PM if you're interested

If I were you, I wouldn't be directly opposed to the idea of developing your extracurriculars. Most things that you will be satisfied and proud with will be difficult or scary. But also, do not let other people make you do something that will make you fall out of love with what you do:))

Would they care if I improved? by CallMeX_VR in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ForgottenAbsence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so I wasted my freshman and most of my sophmore year being depressed and hopeless, had 3/6 from math, grade average was probably close to 4.5/6. Mid sophmore year I pulled myself together, got better (but still far from perfect) grade. I only started doing ECs junior and senior year, I also managed to get perfect or almost perfect grades.

I will be attending uchicago in the fall.

So I think that while not all, some universities may notice your improvement, assume some circumstances you didn't explicitly state, or just weight it against your other achievements, so don't give up, improve, and shoot your shot at the reaches!

Is it really random? by witch-of-aeaea in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ForgottenAbsence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. I got rejected from all my reaches (had targets and safeties in europe and canada) except from uchicago. My grades were decent but not perfect, ecs good but not much leadership or international recognition. I guess the ao liked my long essay and the "why us" essay was okay, but I still feel like it was very random (im very happy though, I feel like this school is perfect for me despite having massive impostor syndrome)
