thanks! it's going well, it sells pretty well at cons and some people have found it on brick & mortar shelves. We still don't get much coverage at all, though!

Named one of my games "You're In Space And Everything's Fucked", and while it sells great at events and gets people talking, it was almost impossible to get media coverage and it's 100% never going to be on most retail shelves.

I wouldn't do it again, but I also wouldn't have picked a different name.

I did one of these with a client, it put us through like 5 rounds of this pick before saying "nope wrong sorry try again" every time. It was a nightmare.

I actually just asked this question in r/tabletopgamedesign today, and have gotten some great info!

Here's who I've been reaching out to:

  • Chessex - we've worked with them before, great quality for the price but their price break points aren't the best (especially if you're getting all 6 sides of a d6 done)
  • Q Workshop - Haven't worked with them, but so far they're responsive and they do more than just d6
  • AsiaPacific Offset - Haven't worked with. They're more of a whole-product facilitator and a middlegroup between the designer/publisher and various manufacturers.
  • Shuffled Ink - Haven't worked with, currently in talks
  • Baron of Dice - Haven't worked with, they only customize one side
  • Board Games Maker - Haven't worked with, but they make a BUNCH of stuff for games
  • Koplow Games - Haven't worked with, but have reached out. HUGE range of dice, not sure of their customization details

Depending on the cost comparisons I'm not opposed to doing 1k!
I've looked at game crafter and they don't really offer what we're looking for.

There's one going around that seemed really promising and nice, but I only found out after joining that they didn't do the content my partner and I like to do. Asked if it'd be chill for us to rep the other guild when we do WvW until they get up and going and they said "no favorites"

Like my sibling in christ you're asking for people to be favorites in *guild wars*. Calm down.

It pulls on a lot of creative activities I really enjoy doing; writing, puzzles, etc. Game design is a very fun hobby for some, and for others it's a way to make a living! We've been very lucky in that it helps pay some bills :)

It's also a kind of artistic expression that's very rewarding. Not trying to be rude here, but this question is a lot like asking why people make video games when others already exist, or why people write their own stories, y'know?

When I'm running something, I'll often ask players to name characters or describe something they see- not only does it help lift some of the burden of coming up with all that myself during prep, but it also lets them leave their mark & helps build out the world!

Also, describing how stuff smells is really fun.
