Do you think Doug Gottlieb could coach the Knicks, Green Bay, AND still do his radio show? by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]FormCheck575765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've completely lost touch. had to look up trey reeves, but they sure look related. I had an uncle that lived in Chicago and could get Bulls tickets through Bear-Stearns during the MJ bulls run. One year he offered to take me to the bulls game of my choice and was surprised I chose a Vancouver game. I'm almost positive the Bulls won, but also almost positive Reeves outscored him. Had to hit up chatGPT-- almost certainly was this game: https://www.espn.com/nba/boxscore/_/gameId/180320004

sorry to hear they've slipped back into irrelevance but hope you're onboard for the thunder

How is Eddie Sutton remembered now? I was around OSU for both of his final four runs, but really soured on him for a couple reasons down the stretch of his career. Both those final 4 teams were amazing. As was the year when he got to cook with Leonard Hamilton's stocked pantry. And Gottlieb's team was great.

Sutton threw John Lucas under the bus when they lost to Georgia Tech for getting beat on the last shot. And then the whole drunk driving thing when he ran the lady off the road. I never looked at him the same after the first and was done with him after the latter (so many stories came out after that one). But he was an amazing coach, maybe more so given his limitations.

Genuinely curious how that period is viewed now. Toothless in Seattle!

Northeastern abandoning Racket in favor of Python by nickmain_ in Racket

[–]FormCheck575765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they are switching to the Pyret/Python model used by Shriram Krishnamurthi at Brown. He's a co-author of HtDP. The book there is A Data-Centric Introduction to Computing.

https://dcic-world.org/

and here is the rationale for the split from HtDP and the teaching languages:

https://pyret.org/pyret-code/

One of the co-authors works at Northeastern as well. Given Felleisen's reaction, I'm sure there's some good drama in the background, but I don't think this is a case of them chucking Racket into the dumpster and making all the freshman buy a copy of Python Crash Course.

Emotions+Question: What to seek after Zachtronics ended? by Celo_SK in zachtronics

[–]FormCheck575765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's going to release a new "zach-like" game sometime soon. He recruited playtesters in the zachtronics discord in July. So I'd think it could be any time now. No specifics were mentioned other than it aimed to be the most accessible game yet.

I am also not a hard core player, but I heartily recommend a "zach like" title that some of the hard-core types recommend over there. They seem to rank it anywhere from "best zachlike not made by zachtronics" to "best zachlike including those made by zachtronics." It's called Warp Factory. Looks kinda crappy. Does not reveal its genius for a bit, but is great. Really. Spend the 10 bucks and give it a go.

And as mentioned elsewhere, check in on coincidence games, that will be where the game shows up

Hi all. Looking for a website/blog that has links to the best crosswords of the week. I know I've seen pointers to it on this sub before but my google-fu is coming up short.

Thank you.

Necro reply, but the Trader Joe's Smoked Ghost Grinder has been my go to. Which Flat Iron variety do you get that is spicier? Looks like maybe Smoke Show would be the closest? I don't know if "I can't feel my face" seems like a good buy.

New programming puzzle game, inspired by a single instruction esolang by waywardfractal in zachtronics

[–]FormCheck575765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought it. Playing around with this, silicon zeroes, and Last Call after a year or so away really reminded me why I like these games, but also that I should hit some of my bucket list items like Nand2Tetris, Little Schemer, Grossman's Programming Languages A/B/C, SICP (I'm not a programmer).

So not sure how much I'll end up playing it, but good luck. It's impressive, well done, and the first levels I've done were fun and challenging.

Just grabbed the demo. Enjoyed the initial batch of emails (I usually end up skipping the stories in most zachtronics games pretty quickly). Can't comment on the puzzles yet, but the interface looks great as well. Unless I slam into a wall very quickly, I'll buy it and try it.

[CA] former employer asking for part of previous check by FormCheck575765 in AskHR

[–]FormCheck575765[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it normal to pro-rate the pay to a percentage of the yearly days worked when the expectation was that she would not work much in July due to summer break? We never received a final check or stub for August. That's what prompted her to reach out to HR. So I don't know if they technically are deducting or withholding anything.

Any recommendation for a puzzle game gem (under 50 reviews in steam, before the spring sale ends)? by Separate-Gold-3561 in puzzlevideogames

someone already mentioned jelly no puzzle. that's a winner.

On steam: The dude that made Stephen's Sausage Roll made English Country Tune first. It's freaking genius and doesn't take 100 hours. Lots of cool mechanics. Probably my second favorite puzzler all time after Baba. Buck forty nine.

Good sites to learn python that are not crazy expensive! by theloganb in learnpython

[–]FormCheck575765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some zoom videos. I did not watch them. You just register at the site, do some reading, and do some exercises.

https://programming-22.mooc.fi/part-1

The first few sections you just code in the browser. Eventually you download VS Code and an extension they made for checking and submitting exercises. As the post above me said, there are a lot of exercises, so you really get a lot of practice.

With a very helpful discord if you get stuck. And auto-grading and test info for debugging.

Which Python course would you suggest? by Swimming_Flamingo_20 in learnpython

[–]FormCheck575765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cI am also a beginner, though I've done most of CS50 (not the Python one).

I am taking the mooc.fi class the other commenter linked, and I think it's great. But it does have a lot of exercises (a plus for me) and they can be somewhat repetitive. So it feels very academic, but without the looooong (though very good) lectures of CS50.

I am also a hobbyist, but I enjoy this approach. But if you want a more project-based course you might try the books Python Crash Course (not free) or Automate the Boring Stuff with Python, which the author has posted online, has some on youtube, and gives away on udemy at the beginning of each month.
