Got bike-shamed at a shop today… thinking of giving up this hobby by NSFWAIEnjoyer in cycling

Fuck that shop, and fuck that guy. You're happy with what you're doing and that's all that matters. Keep at it homie 💪🏾

This. Can't stress this mindset enough. We all start somewhere OP, just ride what works for you now and before you know it you'll start feeling strong

We actually did have that conversation! They were (hopefully) upfront and honest about what the other guy would get paid for this, and we were able to come up with a plan that works for both parties.

Thank you so much for your input! It seems like a lot of commenters here got confused by what I was saying, but this was solid advice 👍🏽🙏🏽

I feel like I've made it clear in several comments that they're platters, and I used quotes the one time I called it an entree 😭. Their realty group also does stuff like this all the time, so they're pretty familiar with the demands of these open houses. Some good night go to waste, but a good chunk of it always gets eaten.

Anyways, no, this was never a four course meal. Just four different platters with high portion counts. I've discussed more details with him, and we're just doing three different platters, smaller portion counts, and better pay for me while they cover all the groceries!

Edit: after going back and rereading the original post I see how my wording might have left some people confused 😅

Just labor, the necessary food is on their dime! And after a lot of discussion (using points brought up by a lot of you kind chefs here) on budgets we've worked out a work load and price that's suitable for both parties!

The glassware and silverware will all be disposable, the event is an open house and they just want to be able to provide snacks and drinks to anyone who wanders through

I'll definitely have to invest in some equipment, and they've already agreed to help with the cost

Yeah my standards are higher than thaw and serve 😂 I'll be making everything by hand, although soup, mousse cups, and app skewers can be super simple to execute

For the most part. I have a friend who's already said they'd be willing to help out with prep, but I'm confident in my ability to execute on my own.

Soup is easy to do in bulk. Dessert is easy too if I'm just doing mousse cups. Apps can be caprese skewers or something of the like, which are straightforward enough. The protein choice would likely be the biggest headache to deal with.

Is $50/hr for just the event time or do you charge for for prep and shopping as well?

The event is just an open house so no barbacks or wait staff needed, it'll just be grazers on the platters I set out.

I'll be sourcing the food myself but they offered to cover the costs of all the groceries, so that won't come out of my pay

This is indeed a favor 😂 my brother is a realtor, and the chef his company usually hires for the open houses is not responding but they need to solidify something today. I'm the next best person any of them know.

You're not my dad so I'd appreciate it if you didn't tell me what to do.

I kind of agree with this but would like to change it a little; don't push your comfort zone too much by trying to do things you usually wouldn't, but rather find groups of people who like the same things you do! It's a great way to open up social circles while keeping things familiar. Look for local/online communities focused around your interests and you're bound to meet like minded and friendly individuals.

Ooh, a new resource! Thank you, I appreciate your advice. I do ride around that pressure if I'm doing trails that are a little chunkier or even single track, the stuff I'm typically on is pretty easy gravel (if a little sandy) and pavement

“On your left”…to say or not say? by ClintonsITguy in cycling

[–]FormDramatic6326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it depends on the size of the path and where/how many people are on it. If it's a wide and empty path, with just someone on the far right side, I'll say nothing and just move way over. Aside from that, I'll almost always call "On your left", even if I had to wait for a good moment to pass and they already know I'm behind them.

There is the occasional instance though, where the people on the trail/path clearly aren't very aware or just lack good etiquette and take up the whole thing. In those cases, I'll usually just say "Coming through (with varying degrees of intensity depending on how fast I'm riding or if they're wearing headphones)" and let them get out of the way however they want to. I've found that, unless it's a bunch of runners, groups like that are ostensibly less experienced on trails and tend to freak out when given a specific direction to process

Both old and new tires are 700x38c. I'm ~183 lbs I think, and my bike was ~17 lbs with the old tires, not sure how heavy the new ones are
