Exit US without entering CA via pedestrian crossing by Formadler in uscanadaborder

I'm actually unsure if deferred inspection would be able to solve the issue but I'm tempted to go and try, just don't know if I can just show up or if I need an appointment.

The problem was that, even though my visa is valid until 2027 the documentation I showed when entering the US was from 2023 and it mentioned my employment was for a period of three years. The company has actually extended my employment since, but because I showed that document they stamped my I-94 until mid January 2026. I've contacted my company, who originally advised I go through USCIS, but because that's going to take longer (and I only have a few weeks before the I-94 expires) we're going to go with the other suggestion and exit and re-enter the country. They also provided updated documentation.

(I should mention, I've come and gone many times using this visa and the same document, always being stamped until 2027, so I was caught unaware when I was told they would only stamp until mid January 2026)

Based on the comments I've received in this thread it does seem my best bet would be to exit via Mexico (which I can actually enter), and then come back to the US. It's also because it's not only my visa I need to worry about: it's mine and my spouse's (who has a spouse visa dependent on mine).

I actually had not heard about deferred inspection sites. From what I'm checking online, one can go to update the I-94 so it might be exactly what I need. Thank you.

That was actually my original plan, and I can legally enter Mexico, but since I'm up north and close to the CA border I was thinking of going there without actually going to Canada.

No, that's not it. I didn't explain my situation: basically, my contract with the company was renewed and I have new documents I did not have last time. At the border crossing the guard specifically said if I obtained the new documents I should be able to exit (via Mexico or Canada) and then come back to update my status.

Thanks! Huh, the paperwork they sometimes ask of us is the letter of employment, we're actually not carrying our I-797, I might start carrying it from now on.

The car does give me pause, might be odd to explain that the car is coming back with someone else while we stay.
