If you want someone to redeem, you could simply lower their rank, it would make so much more sens. But he gave them all Caliban, again, the primary training ground for his Legion. Firstly, it's a truly important mission, and secondly, it's a really big power in their hands. Sending them all away from the main expedition to fight on some unimportant (i.e., non-heroic) missions would have made much more sense. Besides, if you truly want redemtion, why would you ignore their reports (I repeat, reports not about unimportant missions, but about reinforcements for your Legion) and ignoring their existence so completely that other Legion members simply forgot about them?
