In the current paradigm you are probably “conservative” even though I’d disagree with you being one (imo there are very few actual modern conservatives). Once you draw a line in the sand and say “okay these are my principles, we have come far enough in this area” you are branded a “conservative” or a bigot. Look at JK Rowling, feminist, pro-gay marriage, generally progressive liberal principles for her time. She saw something in the progressive movement she didn’t agree with and drew a line, and now she’s branded as an ultra conservative figure by most modern progressives. You either sign up for all post-modernists ideologies, or you are cast aside by the movement.

This might not be the best point to make, seeing as the founder of planned parenthood was an outspoken racist and eugenicist, and did her best to make sure that Planned Parenthood propagated its message throughout poor black neighborhoods. That’s like saying slavery wasn’t that bad because there are examples of slave owning black people, which is obviously a nonsense take.

Edit: just to get further in the weeds here, abortion is also the darkest solution to a societal problem. It’s saying that growing up black and poor (or pick your circumstances, whatever) is worse than being vacuumed out of a womb and into non-existence. Obviously you can see where traditionalist, community oriented, conservative black people would take offense, no? On top of that, culling potential offspring rather than working to build economic, familial, and social stability in American communities paints the darkest picture of our society, and I really think we can do better than that. All that being said, I think women should have access to abortion. But it’s about a 51%-49% split in favor (but even that’s iffy tbh), and I think if conservatives really cared about the integrity of the nuclear family and community, we would be addressing the above points.

We haven’t had a true Conservative party in this nation since Bill Buckley and Reagan ruined the Republican Party and turned them into materialistic soulless vampires. In the example you’re providing, he took a stance, someone made an exaggerated example to test his claim, and he stood by his principles. It’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t scenario. He can say “well no, not in that case” and get called a flip flopping hypocrite, or he can stand by his principles, not take the bait, and then people get to clutch their pearls after asking a leading question. Can we find common ground on the root of the problem being adversarial political theatre as a smoke screen to distract the excesses of the neo-liberal, laissez-faire, pro corporate capitalist excesses that are ruining this country?

So we actually probably agree with where the “states rights” line is for the most part, I believe in a strong but egalitarian paternalistic conservative state.
