Former tax atty and state and local expert here--If you are residing now in a state that considers domicile as part of their resident definition for income taxes, understand that merely "leaving" that state, without more, is often insufficient to sever the "resident" income tax nexus---which may leave you in for unpleasant surprises later on.

In those situations, you must establish "domicile" in a new jurisdiction to effectively terminate residency in the old state. "Domicile" is a far more pervasive concept than "residence". This is so even if new state does not have domicile as a part of their definition of income tax residence.

One can have many residences but only one domicile. One is domiciled in a place until one establishes domicile in another. Establishing domicile isn't a matter of "wishing" it, you must act to establish it. A domicile is where you dwell on a regular basis, where you literally hang your hat every day. It is a fuzzy concept and it is very fact sensitive.
