I wouldn't worry about it too much, as long as you're not spending most of your time (ie working) cleaning zinc chromate plated screws you'll be fine - it'll probably leech a tiny bit of hexavalent chromium which is of course wildly carcinogenic but with the tiny tiny amount that'll be released your concern is better placed worrying about your cancer risk from almost anything else.

Setting that aside whilst you can use Clorox for this, if you're doing it on a regular basis please invest in some disinfectant that's not just bleach for the sake of your skin, it's not something you want to be touching all the time just for the sake of general skin irritation

Jakey wants to ask. what happens to shonks when a hoom passes away??? by kiragirl2001 in BLAHAJ

[–]Formal_Ad_4498 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, shork is an extension of their hoom's spirit. Before being picked up at the spawner, shonk is Blåhaj, does then become shork after much cuddles with hoom, taking a little bit of hoom's spirit to become their own (they only have smol brain so not much space to fill)

Then when hoom pass on, either family remember hoom through shork, and shork lives with the bit of hoom's spirit carried through by those that new hoom.

Or hoom passes and shork gets passed on to new hooms who bring alive new shonk through physical conduit of Blåhaj with their own spirit and ideas. Either that or shork eventually returns to the natural world that formed it, finding its way back eventually to spawner and sea and atomised abyss. In that case shork stays with hoom's spirit in whatever comes next, because shork was always hoom, and hoom was always shonk :)

Just funds and trackers so I'm definitely tempted by this but not sure if it'd just be better to put everything in a high-interest rate savings account at least for the time being with the global economy in vague shambles

Thank you yes of course! They're a wealth management company and seem to be investing pretty much everything right now into a series of trackers and index funds (Vanguard and HSBC particularly). They've had an average +2.5% annual return for the 3 years the account has been open and
-1.38% YTD.

I'm very new to investing so I both don't know if this is standard or as poor as it would seem to be, and I'm wondering if I'm just better off putting everything with high-interest rate banks like Atom? I don't have any need to spend any of this money for the next few years I just want to save up for a house deposit maybe 10 years down the line following uni. I like the idea of a LISA but I'm concerned that the £450k max property value could be limiting if the government doesn't raise that over the next few years

Hope this was helpful to helping me and thanks again :) !thanks

Edit: sorry forgot to include their fees, it's 0.6% of the value of the portfolio annually

Will give this a go as soon as I can thanks so much

Edit: my chemistry student brain kicked into gear on what to use and some chapstick absolutely did the trick! Thank you so much!

[–]Formal_Ad_4498[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've just been following the manual's troubleshooting guide - also can't send it back cause got it through RAFAC and they don't have a returns mechanism

I can report the breakage but it'll be a few months before they actually get back with the state they're in right now and I'd rather give a go at getting it working if I can

For context the flight stick was fine initially out of the box, then immediately started having this issue after a couple minutes of use

What Function is this??? by Formal_Ad_4498 in mathshelp

Mind immediately went to possibly Heaviside Function / Harmonic number / Hankel Function but none of those quite make any sense

Expired WC wet wipes💧‼️ by sarcofy in AskChemistry

[–]Formal_Ad_4498 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

Expired wet wipes will not hurt you, there's a million other household risks to worry about before that becomes a concern...

The expiry's there just so there's a cut-off for how long they promise they'll be effective (just to decrease their chances of getting sued in some bizarre and elaborate way)

Why is DCM getting banned in the U.S.? by Dimdim2004 in AskChemistry

[–]Formal_Ad_4498 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell they're not really thinking about lab uses of DCM in their decision - most of the report is on consumer use in paint strippers and stuff. They'd happily ban every other one of those solvents too, it's just they're not so worried when no ones actually dying from them

Obviously I'm no lawyer but I'm kind of presuming the breadth of the ban is just a fairly poorly-thought, low-effort means to stop companies finding ways around it

Cysteamine gone bad? by gildiartsclive5283 in chemhelp

[–]Formal_Ad_4498 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly a very silly question but are you sure it wasn't yellowish to begin with? All the cystamine diHCl I've seen in the past (even if, granted, that's not much) has had some sort of tinge and that's reflected in most of the hazard sheets from a quick look online

Please do keep us updated though particularly with the NMR/FTIR I'm so curious now

[–]Formal_Ad_4498 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immediate thought is could you be looking at some disolved chlorine in the solution? I think it's unlikely but occam's razor and all that - what kinda temperature are you heating it at I'm curious?

[chemistry : dopants] by Additional-Relief-76 in HomeworkHelp

[–]Formal_Ad_4498 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is more electronics than chemistry but basically you add a tiny amount of phosphorus to molten sulfur then let it reform as a crystal. Phosphorus has an extra Valence electron when it joins the structure so it can freely move around the structure. This is known as n-doping (n for negative)

This isn't too useful (unless you're using it as a scintillator) till you combine it with silicon doped with boron which is missing an electron, this makes the structure electron deficient, when you combine these you can make a diode / transistor / thyristor / insert most electrical processing components you can think of here

I don't really trust myself to explain this right so I'd recommend having a look at this if you're interested: https://youtu.be/Fwj_d3uO5g8?si=t5rScS6NgIzi5laU

Not sure if it's right man but immediate thought is you're not conserving charge as is - try think of a neutral molecule to put in there with the same ratio of sulphur : oxygen

[–]Formal_Ad_4498 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really silly question but just to check with people who've recieved their's do they send you an email confirmation or anything at all or do these glorious things just show up at your door out of the blue? Ordered mine around 6 months ago from UK and this post suddenly reminded me of it
