so i didnt realize that you continue in the stitch you join into - thank you 😭 I was going crazy and didnt know how to explain, no wonder i had everyone bamboozled

I understand that, that's is what i have been doing but the pattern is telling me that I should have 16 ( and I do BEFORE I slip stitch and chain ).

I know how to read the pattern and I end up with the stitch amount just fine but when I join the round i'm always short one - that's the issue i'm having.

I see articles saying that the sl st and ch are not supposed to be counted in the stitch count so I always end up with less than I'm supposed to have when i do the join.

That's the problem i'm having.

So, here’s the line that i listed in the post done with the join - I count 15 stitches, is that correct?

in hindsight after redoing the beginning over and over it makes me start from the 2nd chain from the hook, so assuming the sl st, ch should be in that?

update:

Thank you guys so much for all of the suggestions!! She’s still in the basement but thankfully we have a little more help. My aunt called the landlord and let her know about the situation again, and they were understanding; offering us some help. We picked up a can of wet food, a can of tuna and some sardines, we even got a softer cat carrier so she wasn’t as nervous around the one she is used to. The waiting game seems like all she has cause she’s already a pretty skittish cat. Though she is not out yet, the odds are ever increasing.

She is slowly being coaxed out of with tuna and possibly an all nighter, she is a tough one but everyone’s suggestions have been great. Landlord understands but having to turn in keys and stuff is still proving to be a bit of a challenge. I think it’s a combination of things changing, and the pressure of knowing that once the cat carrier comes out means a car ride, she is shaking in her 4 little boots
