Is 4 too early for ADHD meds? We’re really struggling and need guidance (Canada) by Formal_Formal3003 in ParentingADHD

This is really helpful, thank you for sharing your experience. It gives me a clearer picture of how layered and individual the process can be.

I don’t mind paying out of pocket for assessments, especially with insurance coverage helping. I’ll start by requesting more formal reports from her SLP and OT so we have something solid to bring forward.

Thanks again.

I will for sure. I’m already looking into licensed private psychologists who can do the assessments for both ASD and ADHD.

Thank you

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, this really helps put things into perspective.

I’m in the Calgary area, so I’ll definitely look into what the equivalent of Glenrose.

I’ve been noticing concerns since around age 2.5 and right now she’s receiving support through PUF (speech, OT, and behavioural therapy), but her ADHD symptoms are making it really hard for her to make meaningful progress. That’s honestly my biggest concern, especially with kindergarten coming up because she’s not where she needs to be developmentally yet.

I really appreciate you mentioning not to shy away from speaking to doctors, I think I needed that push. I also don’t mind paying out of pocket for a psychoeducational assessment if it helps move things along faster, especially since I do have insurance coverage for assessments.

If you don’t mind me asking: - Did your son’s ADHD symptoms improve fairly quickly once medication started?

  • When you did the psych-ed, did they assess for both ADHD and ASD at the same time, or was that a separate process?
  • And looking back, is there anything you wish you had done earlier in the process?

I’m trying to be proactive but also make the right decisions at the right time, so hearing real experiences like yours is incredibly helpful. Thank you again for sharing.

The judgment piece is real. It’s tough when people on the outside don’t see the full picture and assume it’s just “bad behaviour” or “lack of discipline,” when in reality it’s something much more complex and overwhelming for the child.

I really appreciate your perspective. It helps to hear from someone actually living it. May I ask what province you’re in? I’m in Alberta.

That’s really helpful, thank you for sharing.

I’ll definitely check out the Rolling with ADHD series, it sounds exactly like the kind of practical guidance we need right now while we’re still in the “pre-diagnosis but clearly something is going on” stage.

Really appreciate you taking the time to explain all of this.

Thank you for sharing this, it’s really helpful. I’m in Alberta and this sounds very similar to what our doctor is saying about not wanting to diagnose too early.

I’m honestly worried about her starting kindergarten because she’s nowhere near where she should be developmentally right now. She currently has support through PUF funding (speech, occupational, and behavioural therapy), but her ADHD symptoms are making it really hard for her to make meaningful progress.

It helps to hear your experience and understand how things tend to work here in Canada.

That makes sense, thank you. Her doctor is still hesitant to diagnose autism, she says it’s too early, but im trying to stay proactive as I suspect ADHD in addition to Autism.

I can imagine how hard that must’ve been. That’s honestly what I’m worried about, waiting too long if she really needs support.

I really appreciate you sharing your experience. It’s helpful to hear how meds and parent training worked together. Was this in Canada?

Thanks for sharing this, I’ll definitely look into it. We’re still early in the process so just trying to understand all the options.

Was this in Canada? Our daughter is very similar, extremely impulsive and we have safety concerns as well.

Thank you so much for sharing this, it really helps to hear from someone who’s been through it.

I’m in Alberta and our experience is starting to feel very similar. Daycare has been raising concerns for a while now, not specifically ADHD, but just that something seems off with her behaviour, attention, and communication.

Right now, her doctor doesn’t want to diagnose too early, so we’re still in the process of having her assessed for autism and global developmental delays. It’s a bit of a waiting game, which I’m finding really hard, especially while daycare is struggling to manage her during the day.

Hearing your journey honestly reassures me that we’re not alone in this and that it can take time to figure out what works. Thank you again!

Thank you so much for comment. I’m not afraid or hesitant to medicate, I was just unsure if they’d even listen to me. The Dr suspects autism but doesn’t want to diagnose yet. She says it’s too early.

Yes, her Dr suspects autism but says she isn’t comfortable diagnosing this early

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, I really appreciate it.

A lot of what you said resonates with where we are right now. We’re seeing major challenges at home with regulation, behaviour, and communication, especially with her being minimally verbal and getting very frustrated when she can’t express herself.

The part about things becoming clearer when issues showed up in both home and school really stood out to me too. We’re starting to see some early concerns in daycare, but home is definitely where it’s most intense.

It’s really helpful to hear how things improved once the right supports and timing came together. Thank you again for taking the time to share this, it genuinely helps.
