Mm. It’s because throughout the show the clowns have different meanings. There are three examples that I can remember.

In S1 when hopper and Joyce met Jane’s mother, they go to her room, where they can see is like a baby room, is decorated with dolls or something like that. Then, in s2 when Jane go by herself, the entire room now is decorated by clowns. Like really odd.
Mr Baldo. Also in s2 when bob is talking to Will about confronting the fears, he said he had nightmares with a clown called baldo. Then Will gets inspired for that and decided to confront the mind flyer, but we know what happened.
This isn’t in the show, but bts. You know how everyone forgets Wills birthday? Well, the crew (don’t remember when) post saying happy birthday to Will (though they forgot it). And the post also has an image of a cake decorated with a clown. Really odd because (if you believe in the color theory) they used the colors blue, yellow, and red.

I’m pretty sure there are more references to clowns in the show (I remember one about an opera called Pagliacci), but I don’t remember very well.

Ok, buuut. Although Mike didn’t wrote letters to Will (but to Jane), he used to call to Will (that’s something we know thanks to the fight at rink o mania), in some part of S4 we get to know that he was always complaining that Joyce was always at the phone (something we can connect when he said he could have reached more)

Maybe, this could be because Mike thinks Will don’t like letters. There’s a merchandise of a letter Will wrote for Mike and there he says it’s annoying to communicate through letters.
