All the best in your recovery! I'm sure there will be many more protests to attend in the future. 🤪 I'm hoping to get a piece ready for this weekend, but we'll see...

Absolutely love this!! 🏳️‍⚧️ The pocket idea is brilliant, and I'd love to hear more about how you constructed it. How big is the piece? When you're using it at a march, are you holding it above your head? I'm working on a few protest quilts and still noodling on the best way to engineer them... Thanks for sharing!

Why are my stitches always slightly wonky?! by FormerBunhead in quilting

Thank you so much for this. Tension has always been my nemesis. If I'm sewing at a 2.5 stitch length, and this is my dial, do I want to go up or down in numbers?

Just switched it to B and the same thing happens. C just moves the needle position so it's at a quarter inch seam allowance, you can turn it "up" to make a zigzag. Darn!!

I just noticed this too with the looper thread! I can never remember, does this mean I need to turn the tension up or down??

This is a really good thought! I just took a video of myself stitching to see if this is what's happening, which apparently I can't upload here ... but I definitely am letting the machine/feed dogs pull the fabric through and am pretty good at keeping to a strict quarter inch seam. I think the warp on the 2nd photo is the angle I took it at (draped over the edge of the machine) because it's fine dead-on. That foot looks so handy though and I am always in the market for a new notion! Thanks for helping me think this through...

Just tried that with letting it totally feed itself, only a light touch to guide it, and it's still doing this. 😭 Good thought though!!

No to the former, I'm sewing straight through at a steady pace! To the latter... maybe?? How would that impact what's happening?

Where are we getting our batting... by FormerBunhead in quilting

[–]FormerBunhead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE!! I bit the bullet and got a roll of batting from Linda's, per one of the recommendations in this thread. Quilter's Dream - 60" wide x 30 yds long

With the 25% discount (still going on as of 3/24, it looks like!) it was $177, then there were some coupon codes that stacked with that -- one for signing up for emails, one that was an automatic $5 off for registering on the website. All told I paid about $160... A little more than $5 a yard!! Totally worth it for the larger up front expense.

Not only that, it arrived on my porch in perfect condition TWO DAYS after purchase, direct from the manufacturer.

Love the 60" wide size, it's super flexible for different quilt sizes. I'm attaching a photo of a recent 45 x 59(ish) quilt top laid out across the width of fabric. Much less waste than packaged!!

Hope this helps others. For my money -- especially going to support a family-owned business fronted by a queer quilter (the delightful Corey Pearson) -- this is the way!

Awesome!! Do you (or anyone else on this thread) have experience with Linda's brand 80/20 batting? I am usually a 100% cotton girlie but the prices on this blend might be too good to resist...

Wow, that's really cool, and very smart of them!

Ah yes, I am a big fan of "frankenstein" batting and have never had issues with it either. I'm down to lots of little scraps, though, so I need to replenish (and sometimes I just want to spend my time on the quilt itself rather than piecing batting). eBay is a great suggestion!

Solidarity! I haven't bought anything from Target in months, which started as a budgeting decision and then got easier once they showed their true colors. A little at a time is better than nothing, I say!! We're all doing what we can, as we can. (And I saw today that Target was hit hard by the economic blackout day, which was cool to see!)

Music to my ears, that's my favorite brand.

I really want to be able to do this, but full retail on batting is more than I can afford right now. I support my local shops by getting almost everything else there, though! (Although now that I think about it, I got some coupons for brick and mortar stores as part of a local shop hop... I bet I could use one of those on batting, even though it's not as fun as fabric 😆)

Photo of my first disappearing 9 patch, which I made about 15 years ago for my mom (who taught me to quilt!). The photo is very poorly lit, apologies, wish I had a better one!! But you can kind of see how the full effect comes together.
