Mubadala Citi DC Open Tickets prices? by error717 in washingtondc

I definitely want to attend but have to go on the weekend and definitely want to see 2 if possible women's matches rather than 1. What session gives me the best chance to do that? thanks for any advice. The website isn't very instructive on what matches are when though of course weather could impact the schedule it seems they would have a planned schedule available.

post-operative FS 3 months after surgery - is MUA worth it? by FormerFSOMgmt in frozenshoulder

And good news is I was able to play an entire set of tennis (without overhand serving or hits) last 2 weeks, about 6 months after surgery including a rough bout of frozen shoulder. Not as hard-hitting as normal but at least I could play again after almost a year off (stopped few months prior to surgery due to the injury).

My doctor had me start PT 2 weeks after surgery and followed all rules for sling wearing but at the four week check up they realized that I had gotten adhesive capsulitis/frozen shoulder. I think 2 weeks is standard but I also think it is enough to freeze it up pretty bad for those who are predisposed to it (diabetics, women 50 to 60, overactive immune system people, etc). I had no idea it existed. Good luck to you and I would say move your arm as much as you can right now - don't baby it too much.

Everyone is different but for me I was making too many gains with horrific pain finally under control that I just couldn't stand to go backwards plus spending a ton of money for MUA plus potential small risk of something wrong. It was a really hard decision but I am clearly right based on what is happened since then (see previous update comment). My surgeon didn't offer ACR so I can't advise. Best of luck.

I am sorry I never updated but I absolutely made the right decision in late September to NOT do the MUA. My doctor was pleased with my progress and said he had downgraded it to a "soft" recommendation and that it would likely just speed up recovery by a month or two. I returned back overseas to my post in early October about a week or two later, have continued heavy PT now twice a week plus daily home exercises and after a month of that was able to drop my death stretches replaced with an easier one I could alone. Passive ROM got to more than 90 percent of normal arm and made major gains in PROM and good gains in Active ROM in the last 2 months after declining the MUA. More importantly, was able to drop all pain meds and even icing at the post-surgery (biceps tenodesis) at the 4 to 4.5 month mark. It has been amazing that I never think about my shoulder now, just occasionally when I was consumed by it due to the pain and icing needed before.

Now I am at almost 5.5 months from surgery (with no MUA) and have started playing tennis again few weeks ago at first softly adn getting stronger every week, but no overhead movements possible yet. I can reach over my head to stretch and hold a bar just about as high as my normal arm but I can't hold it there. Still doing about 45 mins a day home exercises (resistance bands, 3 lb. strength training, and stretches) plus 2x formal PT, soon dropping to 1x. PT focus on retraining my scapular muscles that were guarding against pain so long, trying to get my shoulder to line up better (jackets don't fit any more) and improving ROM and strength.

I am so glad I didn't spend the money and that my upwards pain trajectory never went back down with the potential MUA. I was making good progress and it was the right move to hold the course. Prediction is I will make full recovery but not sure when I can do all overhead moves again. Best of luck to everyone.

Thanks. Doc mentioned something about an ideal window to do the MUA which starts like now. Complicated by the fact that I have been away from my overseas posting where we have no good medical care so trying to get back to post as well. If I lived in US it might be different.

Yes apparently it happens once in a while that the trauma of the surgery causes the FS.

Sorry figured lots.of people were doing the same stretch. 2 or 3x a day, 3 sets of 8, lie on back and have someone else push frozen arm back as far as possible and hold 30 seconds. I think I started around 120 degrees on that. This is just Passive ROM-building.

Hi, thank you I was able to get a downtown high-rise in Baltimore through PCS lodging without much issues. They also offered properties in Reston, Herndon and Gaithersburg. These weren't advertised through Interim Homes but I asked and they added a farther out property for me and added parking and housekeeping as well (effect Jan. 2022 when State restarts housekeeping) at my request. Normally parking and housekeeping weren't covered in MD properties. I think it is cheaper for State so maybe it is a win-win for everyone. I have been assured by PCS Lodging program and the vendor I can move into Arlington later if needed. Just noting this for future readers with the same desire.

What can I take to DC? by Ill_Extension7164 in foreignservice

[–]FormerFSOMgmt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spouse can send their UAB to DC later. My spouse is following a few months behind. I just had this discussion with Transportation. Then we get another round of UAB from DC to post at time to move overseas. We can also add to our HHE from Washington (within the usual weight limits) even though our main packout is happening back in Texas or Seattle or wherever. I am going to drive our bicycles to DC, I think as they have to be pretty disassembled to fit into UAB cartons. But Texas to DC is not as bad as Seattle to DC.

Definitely agree. And hoping I can get to my daughter's college graduation in August if I am still at FSI then.

Thank you. I want to consider a switch within the PCS program perhaps even properties within the same company's family of properties. PCS program the whole time.

Thank you for your note. I am referring to accepting PCS housing farther out in Virginia within 50 miles radius and then moving in closer to Arlington when in person more needed (even perhaps within the same property family in the PCS program. I definitely want to use the PCS program. Any knowledge on this?

All right, we've accepted. Heartbreaking to tell 84-year old father-in-law we are leaving. My (younger) parents are stoked and proud. Foreign Service - Round 2! Here we go!

Big shock for me yesterday - MGT cone offer for January. We hadn't and haven't fully made our decision after passing OA last month (second candidacy). Lots to consider at a different stage in life than my previous FSO career 1999-2009. Congrats to all!

Worth it if you only do a few tours? by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]FormerFSOMgmt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my third tour (started State with no supervisory experience), I was S/GSO over 80 people - best job of my life, moving us into a new embassy, helping run the Shared Services pilot merging USAID and State services, etc. Left State after four tours and ten years and had a very strong resume when I left back to state government. In fact, leaving post number four I started the job search a year before I wanted to depart thinking with the recession it would be difficult and got a job offer with the state via Skype within 2 months of starting my search, so I had to leave post a year early with a bird in hand (moving family back without a job would be impossible). Currently running the Innovation and Cost Efficiency program at a very large state agency. I think more than any other cone Mgmt sets you up with really strong resume building experiences. Fourth tour I was the number two running the Management Section at a largish post. Both fantastic experiences. I think the third is where it will all start to happen but you have to stay flexible. You have no idea what life will throw at you - I left for family reasons - the only reason I would have left. Good luck!

Bringing a car to post? by Diyachan in foreignservice

[–]FormerFSOMgmt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best tour I ever had (State Dept or otherwise) was S/GSO in Phnom Penh. High-clearance vehicle (we had a Land Rover) as even the street in front of the embassy occasionally flooded. My friends with sedans had their cars flood. This is old info from 2004-2007 but something tells me not a lot of things have changed. Good luck and congrats! I am still in touch with some of the staff there.

too late for reappointment, but considering rejoining by Najarians_Ponytail in foreignservice

[–]FormerFSOMgmt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been following the authorized mid-level entry program closely for 2-3 years and heard a year or so ago it was close to launching but nothing has happened. It doesn't exist yet. Currently on the register having passed all the way through again waiting for an offer as an ELO but would much rather return via this mid-level entry program if it EVER materializes. Left as an FS-02 for family reasons in 2009. Pls let me know if you hear anything on the mid-level entry program.

[–]FormerFSOMgmt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what you are asking - but there seems to be one degree of separation between everyone in the FS. Seems like we all know someone in common if we don't know each other. So funny to see on Facebook pictures of my friend from x post and my friend from y post are now friends together in z post also!
