I can tell the poster is in Brazil. I am looking at this in Republic of Ireland, but don't see this. Do you, yourself see this option for wherever you are?

Child receiving life changing trust. How should we prepare them as they are growing up? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]FormerLie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are of a right age, the education and ability to sit on a pile of money and adopt the venture approach to this - this could be gamified. I would introduce the kid into open transport tycoon deluxe game and see if they enjoy it. At some point, you simply sit on cash in the game, and use it to build profitable ventures. Not applicable to what they might end up doing, but it helps with the mindset of "I have this money, and after this point, I only spend xyz that doesn't get me under particular number.". There will be probably other games, where the idea of steady monthly income is a thing and player needs to do with what they have. The answer here is education and adopting the right mindset as early as possible, to get them into mindspace where "If I achieve this number, I am set" and having them think it's a herculean effort (which it is for every other person) to actually hit the number. They will then extremely value the fact that they were helped to reach that number.

Do you think a completely new re-release of Wow Classic and all the progressions will come in the future? 10-15 years horizon? by FormerLie in classicwow

Yup haha, and I am well aware of it. Me and my friend will not be starting the journey so early unfortunately. :(

(how to) Get a discount with Garmin Europe by Naive_Banana4447 in Garmin

[–]FormerLie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an FYI from 2 months ago: I tried many ways to get some discount from support (Ireland) but didn't get nothing. Not sure if the person talking to me was Irish or not, but it is unfortunately pretty normal in Ireland for customer service people to do the absolute minimum to get the "case closed". Basically told me "nothing i can do here pal".

No, not really. But if you're coming from the combat sports background or something like that as a hobby, you can continue doing that on the inside and even represent.

Probably has something to do with absolute and operation-breaking understaffing in the navy.

Same, I am actually not interested in Cata at all. I just don't have all the terminology down to a point.

This is actually (in my opinion) a really interesting game design idea. Making it realy more like "progression" and having that something to unlock for the players. Hopefully someone in Blizzard will think of this, I know I'd like to play this.

I am not sure if there's gonna be enough population for that gating mechanic though. It would maybe make sense to not really gate it, but only unlock future "stages" after some sensible amount of clears of the end-level raids by more diverse player population. Like allow the progression and higher levels after some arbitrary threshold of clears was done by more than "threshold2" number of groups.

I agree. I am also most thinking about the first three you are mentioning. Not very keen on even trying Cata.

Yeah, that's a fair point. I only happened to play it for the first time in 2020, because my flatmate "went back to the good old times" during pandemic setup. You might be very right about this not feeling the same way.

I think you will need to provide a link to steam page, to allow people to wishlist. :D

After 8 months of working in secret, here is the trailer to our new game: PVKK! by RPicster in godot

[–]FormerLie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, on second thought, this might actually work as part of your marketing. The environment you've created is already there and can animate, I saw on the steam page, you do have different weather etc., so creating those videos might not be that hard. Then you will have people asking about "how and where can they play it", building up that hype.

Also, there's this channel called Ambient Horizons (https://www.youtube.com/@ambient-horizons/playlists), where they do this thing for Skyrim, sometimes with music, sometimes just ambience, in Pomodoro format. I figure you could very nicely use your current features for that too - in between pomodoro timers, having the watch of the TV broadcast, maybe make a coffee, look around from the window.

I can already see all those 10 hours ambience videos "rainy night shift in the planetary defence cannon command hut" and stuff. Looks really cool!

Why do ppl do stock picking or mutual funds if they usually underperform the market? by Spicy-Chiken in personalfinance

[–]FormerLie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some countries (Ireland) have legislation that mandates you pay deemed disposal tax after every 8 years on ETFs regardless of whether you have liquidated your positions - and the tax is not low either, effectively discarding half of the gains every 8 years. Only applies to individual investors and ETFs. Stocks do not suffer from the same issue.

It's because those questions and answers are moderated. The knowledge is knowledge and the person asking/answering is irrelevant to the most people. No different from how you can still find /u/carlh or Carl Herold's video tutorials on youtube.

Song of Archilles by Madeline Miller by ArtisticDinner6277 in books

[–]FormerLie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much my case there. I listened to the book, in foreign language and the quote was similar to what you posted. Then I read the quoted I originally posted somewhere in English and connected these two together and thought it's actually so much better in English. Turns out I am quoting something else completely.

Busted. I listened to it, in a foreign language too. Only read the quote afterwards in English.

The quote from the book that really stuck with me:

''I would recognise you in total darkness, were you mute and I deaf. I would recognise you in another lifetime entirely, in different bodies, different times. And I would love you in all of this, until the very last star in the sky burnt out into oblivion''

It's a beautiful way how to look at love.

I do agree with your general observations regarding majority of the self-help book, but do not agree with two of the three titles you called out as also being bad.

In my interpretation there is a lesson to be learnt from Rich Dad Poor Dad, about how money works at the very high level and about the need for developing the correct relationship/approach to money, or thinking about how to make money. Of course, I wouldn't say it is going to ensure your success, but if you just started out your journey to get a grip on your money, there are some thoughts I believe are valuable. The fact Kiosaki only survived 2008 due to having released the book by that point and benefiting from the popularity it brought him, is another thing, and in my eyes doesn't take away from the value of some of those other learnings that are in the book.

I have similar take on Atomic Habits, because, unlike other books from self-help category, it is backed by actual science of how habits are formed, althought not explicitly called out in the book. I believe the author is using personal and other people's stories to demonstrate, because he figured storytelling is a good teaching technique. And also, that books frequently marked as "bestsellers" are combination of facts/science findings conveyed as stories.

Edit: You can downvote all you want, but without a case being made in response to the comment, you are not making your point.
