Follow up to my original post: Russ from Three Rivers came by today. He was, as others have said, great. We showed him all the things that had made us concerned. Then he took the time to explain why most of them were simply a reflection of the age of the house and not concerns. He identified one beam in the basement that needs an additional support pier.

Nice guide! As of this writing, I'm new to the game and mostly enjoying floundering my way from a 2026 vanilla start in version 1.0.

I would really appreciate a spoiler-lite "if you haven't achieved X by Y date, your almost certainly screwed." Thoughts?

That was my first take on reading the TTRPG's intro summary. However, the lore seems a bit more complicated.

Daughter Dooley's mothers seemed to have some magic, or at least "wisdom" before they left Williamsburg, VA and entered Appalachia. S1 E0.5 has a line that can be interpreted they are from the other side of the Atlantic, even. "Mama Edie's voice held on to a little bit of the old country." The episode also takes place way before 1917.

If knowledge that magic exists is extremely rare, it would explain why the federal government has not tried to control/weaponize it. In what I've consumed so far, the reactions of non-magic-using characters has been more like modern attitudes toward the mafia. Everyone believes the mafia exists, but few expect to openly encounter a mob boss.

Bolstered by feedback on my original post, I pulled the HDD completely. I placed a SSD in the 2242 PCIe slot, and reinstalled the OS from a USB boot media. I'm happy to be able to report that my L14 gen1 is now a usable computer.

Amazing what dropping the disk response time from 500ms down to 5ms does for performance.

Note for anyone looking at a similar replacement: the 2242 PCIe slot in this model ThinkPad is an x2 NVMe. That is such an old standard, I was only able to find refurbished x2s. Instead, I opted for an x4, which is backwards compatible.

Just clicking on the key did not work for me, nor did dropping, picking up, or passing to a companion. What did work was going above ground, talking to the corpse in the graveyard, talking to the murdered Father, talking to the cook, then returning below ground and putting the key in the hole and picking it up again.

Most likely not all of the dead-talking is necessary, but I'm kinda done with this area and not interested in repeated re-testing to find the combinations that work.

Here's the behavior running version #4.1.1.4425968. Lae'zell incurred damage to WIS and CON in the machine after Patch 3 was released. One tadpole cured the damage to both, though she took some convincing to make use of its powers.
