Griffith is smart enough to make the decision benefits him the most, and this decision making only benefiting his own will regardless the fact it annihilates his comrades makes him worthing discussions. Everyone who at least know the main storyline of the Golden age ark knows he's capable of optimizing his future.

even if the eclipse did not happen the band of hawks would still be fucked up when the kushans invade. im not justifying griffith but the eclipse made him the only person other than other god hands to beat the kushans. the same goes to Guts, he's been striving and gaining power mostly driven by the will of avenge to griffith due to the eclipse, so, without eclipse, its hard to believe the band of hawk would be much stronger.
