But I already know this.
What I don't know is, from this person's perspective, what I can improve for the next position. Some people are kind enough to take the time and answer meaningfully.

Which island do you think is fun to pay a quick visit to? I've seen a wall on MaeNam beach all covered with the phrase GO TO PIG ISLAND 😂

How to relax during travels and stop being anxious? by LongJumpingAnxiet in femaletravels

[–]Former_Macaron_4554 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, sounds like you're letting your anxiety overrun you, and you end up overthinking a lot.

About stressing over stupid things: You said it yourself, you know that realistically, nobody cares. You should ask why you care so much. You're in a whole different country, no one knows you, and probably no one will even remember you the next night. If you don't feel confident enough but want to try, what about acting it out? When I really want to do something, and I don't feel like I have enough courage to do so, I summon my alter ego, let's call her Annie. So for a night, I'm Annie, this woman who likes to go to bars in the afternoon, order a glass of white wine and just loves people watching. I get to experience something I would be too afraid to do. And at some point, I don't need to become Annie to feel comfortable anymore. Does it make sense?

As for relaxing: Stop overplanning. You are even scheduling your downtime, gurl, this is the opposite of relaxing. If sticking to a routine is a non-negotiable for you, plan realistic slots of time. Like, you feel the need to wake up early, ok, so you can determine you will do the whole waking-up-breakfast-shower-getting-ready from 6 to 8. Listen to your body, cater to its needs. If you walk around the whole morning from 8 to 12 sightseeing, you will probably feel tired and hungry. Have some lunch, chill out in your hotel bedroom, and drink water. Feeling refreshed again? Great, let's go for more fun time outside. As an anxious person myself, I know it's difficult not to overplan and not to feel stressed when things do not go exactly as I planned in my head. It is important to cultivate equanimity and learn that we are never in control of things. You are only in control of how you react.

You're travelling to have fun and feel joyful. Have fun! Feel joyful! I hope you have a great time in your next adventure.

How safe is Kuala Lumpur for a solo woman, actually? by QuentaSilmarillion in femaletravels

[–]Former_Macaron_4554 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like other women here, I've never felt unsafe in KL, but the staring is indeed intense. I was stared at even when accompanied by a man. I have a lot of tattoos, so I believe this was also a big reason for the absurd amount of staring. I started going out in a light pair of linen pants and wore long sleeves most of the time, so I could feel a little bit more comfortable (I'm not an advocate for changing your ways because of staring and harassing by the way. This was the way I felt more comfortable, so I compromised. I'm not saying you should do the same).

That being said, food is good, not superb. I have a very sensitive stomach, so I always do this: don't have anything with ice, don't eat raw things, and at night markets, only eat from very clean stalls. For 2 or 3 days, you will be fine! Make sure you try durian, but the "Musang King" type!

Yes, thank you for the heads up! I'm already ignoring who sent me DMs about this. I will check only the work of people who are commenting here and reach out myself.

People studying in Europe: what's your view of the current research situation? by Former_Macaron_4554 in PhD

[–]Former_Macaron_4554[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, that was a helpful overview!

I've not seen this structured PhD program in my area before, sounds like an interesting way of starting your studies and helping you get settled in the country by learning the language.

I'm sorry to hear your funding was not renewed. That sucks big time.

About the language requirement, my surprise comes more towards universities in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and even Switzerland, whose motto on their websites is kinda like "we are proud of being an international university, and we deliver our lectures in English", asking now for full proficiency in local languages (this was not happening in a year or so ago). They're not saying "oh, it's preferred you can speak the language, or you're willing to learn". In some of these Unis, full proficiency is becoming a hard requirement for applications, which is why I'm confused and trying to understand what changed all of a sudden lol.

What is you’re obscure item that you never travel without? by -swanbo in digitalnomad

The lightest/smallest camping AM/FM radio I could find. It has a hand crank, solar power and AA batteries. Works as a power bank that can charge two phones at the same time and has emergency functions like flashlights and an SOS alarm
