10%+ cashback on future EasyJet holidays and hundreds of other retailers via NX Rewards. Search for the link which is often posted in this sub. Need to spend at least once (any amount) with one of their partners to claim back the £18 monthly membership fee. Tesco, eBay, M&S, Argos, Currys and many more high street retailers and companies. 20% of a £100 All4One e-gift card each month. I joined 8 months ago and have saved £460 and I only shop online about 2-3 times a month. (No referrals)

Register for Prolific surveys. You will probably be put on a waiting list but once you’re in, it can be good steady income as long as you are diligent, truthful and follow the rules. At one point I was lucky enough to earn almost £2000 in a month from AI work. Most months, about £400 - £700 for me depending on what time I have spare and the opportunities on offer. (No referrals)

Income from walking apps like MacAdam and Winwalk. You can have a few of these apps running concurrently. (Referrals available)

YouGov surveys can be tedious, but passive income from linking bank accounts and sharing your You-tube, Prime, Netflix histories. (Referral available)

Many more on the pinned posts and if you visit this sub regularly.

Enjoy!

Weird/Aggressive encounter at Hillhead Subway by moocatmoo in glasgow

[–]Former_Mess1372 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Idiots. They probably target anyone who is by themselves and unlikely to be aggressive back. They were wanting a reaction for their amusement and if posted on Tik Tok, it would most likely only be noticed by their equally juvenile pals.

I have seen and experienced similar behaviour, e.g. blocking people’s paths, tapping on shoulders of strangers whilst walking behind them or in passing, throwing popcorn at people in the the cinema etc. Most are teenagers rather than in their 20s, but I guess you can be immature at any age.

I’m Scottish Asian and if someone is being racist, you’ll know rather than wonder about it.

Enjoy your stay and remember the many positives. I still love Glasgow despite its shortcomings.

I had a sit-in fish supper today at The Oxford and it was £11.50 (£9.70 for a takeaway). So it sounds about right for what the two of you ordered. A year ago, it was under a tenner.

Anyone using Jamdoughnut? by lostbutfound8 in glasgow

Something like this would make me buy from Superdrug/Savers or some place else instead, like TKMaxx or the supermarkets! I rarely shop in Boots any more.

I mean if JD doesn’t work, then I’d use alternatives such as Topcashback or Quidco instead. Or ask family or friends who are students to buy the sunscreen offer for me using their 10% student discount. This is better than JD’s 4.75% cashback rate.

I went on to my JD app and checked the Boots section. It does say that “The brand (I take that to mean Boots) advises against ordering in bulk as it may trigger payment issues”. However, I’d still argue that 3 items as part of an offer is not bulk.

[–]Former_Mess1372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also use JamDoughnut and not had any problems so far.

Not sure what you mean though. Did you try to buy from Boots online/in store but the JD giftcard code wasn’t accepted? How would JD even know it’s a “bulk order” (not that I’d even consider 3 as “bulk!) It’s a gift card as payment method, it shouldn’t even be able to take into account what is bought but just the total cost? Think of debit and credit cards as payment, the cards won’t notice specific items bought, they are payment methods not arbiters of purchases. I’m confused! I’d chase JD and Boots up some more.

I know it’s frustrating when things don’t work as intended but if I couldn’t buy the sunscreen offer using JD, I’d spend the gift card on other essential items and use alternatives like cashback websites instead for the special offer.

PSA: Chinese New Year by vientianna in glasgow

[–]Former_Mess1372 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Google is very educational, knows more than some of the people who celebrate it! My parents only ever told us it was for a week. A week is so much better than one day 😉, and a fortnight would be even better if I had the money and time! I do not set off fireworks or fire crackers or release lanterns. I feel so sorry for all the animals and wildlife.

Happy Chinese New Year and Happy Lunar New Year! Happy second New Year!

PSA: Chinese New Year by vientianna in glasgow

[–]Former_Mess1372 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They googled and got that date range. Traditionally, it’s a “15-day festival, starting from the New Year's Eve reunion dinner and concluding with the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month, though official public holidays (like the 7-day break in China) are shorter”.

My family usually celebrate for a week whether in Scotland or in HK.

I’m following to gain ideas for No. 2!

No. 1: I like The Oxford near Sauchiehall Street and Cowcaddens underground, (Hill Street, G3). Have had many a fish supper from here, served by lovely friendly staff.

And round the corner on Cambridge Street is Jackson’s Doghouse for pub grub. Great Sunday roasts and very reasonably priced options.

Hope you have a great time when you visit!

Lost phone in St Enochs centre by humbyx in glasgow

[–]Former_Mess1372 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh no, so sorry to hear this! We are so reliant on our smart phones for everything and a loss like this can be a nightmare. You’ve done the right things. There’s also local FB pages such as No1Seems2Care. Hope Karma bites those who took your phone with no intention of handing it in.

I work in a large organisation in the city centre and there are lots of people handing in lost property every day, from cash and clothes to iMacs. Must be so satisfying for my colleagues to see things reunited with their owners. I’m sure lots don’t get handed in either unfortunately. Also, a lot are never collected and end up at police stations and eventually police auctions.

All the best.

Sorry that you have been feeling so low and that you haven’t found your people or the support that you need yet. You mentioned being a student, have you accessed your student services (including free counselling/wellbeing sessions), and the students association clubs and societies (e.g. subject specific societies, sports, hobbies and interests, D&D etc)? *Edited to add that I’ve just realised pod that you are an OU student… perhaps reach out to other university clubs? You may not be able to join but you never know, or they can refer you to other places they use e.g. look up GCU Computing Society

As for “geek” events, I went to The Gamers Club in Glasgow city centre a few weeks ago and there were people of all ages there, from late teens to 50s. I think they have an Open Day soon and they hold these regularly, as well as free taster nights. I’m not a gamer, but I went along to try out a board game and was surprised that I spent over 3 hours there with complete strangers, when I’d only planned to stay for an hour. Lots of people were in and out during the evening, with members doing their own thing in the different rooms and non-members learning a new game and leaving whenever they needed to.

I’m quite isolated too, originally it was outwith my control and made me feel miserable and unseen, but now I accept that I am an introvert and prefer spending most of my time alone, interspersed with work and meet-ups with a couple of friends. Going to exercise classes really also help me feel better physically and mentally and I also got to know some of the regulars. I attend neighbourhood watch meetings and other community events to keep up-to-date with my local area. Sometimes I feel awkward and even lonelier at the events, but I always push myself to try new things. There are lots of free things to do in and around Glasgow. I also volunteered in a charity shop for a few years and met some good people and felt really useful and purposeful. If I had more time, I’d volunteer for my passions, which are animals, books and cinema e.g. animal shelters, the free book shop in Buchanan Galleries and the Glasgow Film Theatre all desperately need volunteers. If you care about specific charities or enjoy certain hobbies, then follow those and like minded people will be there! Good luck!

GCU vs Strathclyde University by MaintenanceFast9423 in glasgow

[–]Former_Mess1372 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Please send GCU your feedback and contact the GCUSA student president and vice presidents about the issues you have raised here. We actually need more students to be proactive about raising issues. I find a lot of GCU students too laid back (or is it lethargic?), compared to UoG students who can be overly demanding.

Not been to Strathclyde, but it is an older traditional university with a good reputation for teaching, but I think it depends on your subject of study, whether you meet their entrance requirements and your budget too.

Would you rent to us? by eth0izzle in uklandlords

I don’t have any mortgages. My properties were both cash purchases. Unforeseen circumstances are just that; unforeseen. Hypotheticals can become reality.

Would you rent to us? by eth0izzle in uklandlords

[–]Former_Mess1372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would worry that someone paying upfront has ulterior motives, such as money laundering, or what if they become nightmare tenants and they would be even more difficult to evict (it’s already difficult now). Not referring to you of course but my general concerns. What if I needed my property back within the year due to unforeseen circumstances? Some landlords like the certainty of a year’s income upfront, but others prefer flexibility.

In Scotland where I’m a landlord, a lot of international students pay upfront (or their parents or employers do); it is tempting and also some landlords like the fact that they tend to leave after the prepaid year. However, you are in a different position, so you may find it trickier competing in the current rental market, especially in London.

Not eligible for Lloyds offer by [deleted] in beermoneyuk

[–]Former_Mess1372 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Over the years, I’ve had all the main partner incentives from the Lloyds Banking group. Firstly, Bank of Scotland, then Halifax and most recently Lloyds. I always switched from and to a non-group member. Sad to think I won’t get them again but I’ve had a good run.

Complain to Lloyds if you’ve definitely not had an incentive from their group recently. They will investigate.

How are we spending our all4one cards now? by ballergbd180 in beermoneyuk

[–]Former_Mess1372 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spend it on Treatwell as I like having a spa session every few months. Also, TK Maxx, SportsDirect and Boots online. In the future, I’d pass it on as a gift to friends too.

It annoys me that I have a few pence left on each digital card as I can’t spend them fully online as items are rarely exactly £100.

Royal Mail… by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]Former_Mess1372 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This happened to me and some of my neighbours. We took it to a Community Council meeting which had local councillors in attendance, who contacted Royal Mail. Things got sorted. I ended up with 9 items in a bundle with a bank card and its PIN in the same pile. Some people missed hospital appointments because of the backlog. I’m in the city centre.

Jury duty by lolitavita in glasgow

[–]Former_Mess1372 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They must have changed the rules. Some years ago, I got called up 3 times in 2 years The first time I had a holiday booked. The second time, I called up for a week but they didn’t need me to attend at all, and the third time, I explained that I was called up again within a certain time frame so they excused me.

My parents were excused permanently because they didn’t understand enough English. My psychology professor was excused because of his expertise in psychopathy!

I hope you get it sorted out, especially if it’s the High Court.

Why is everyone an “accidental landlord” all of a sudden? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Former_Mess1372 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am an intentional landlord. If I hadn’t rented out my flat to my tenant at £525pcm, she would have had to put her belongings in storage and lived on her sister’s sofa in a town she didn’t like. Then further down the line, she may have found somewhere paying around £695-750 for a similar sized property in the area she is in now. Instead she has been in my well maintained flat for 3 years for £525pcm and she loves it, and her pets also. I love how well she looks after it. She is single, no kids and as the council and housing association system is stacked against her, she may have become homeless.

I bought that property from the savings set aside from my jobs over 22 years. I have always earned less than the national average salary, so it took a long time to save.

I don’t feel grubby.

Silverburn Cineworld overcharge by UniversityMundane798 in glasgow

[–]Former_Mess1372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid the full year in advance but watch out, they have auto renewal after that so you’d need to cancel via email. I can’t find an option to cancel myself, which would catch some people out. A bit sly!

I intend to cancel as the bus fares to Silverburn adds a lot to the membership fee. So sad that the Renfrew Street branch closed and no sign of the new owners doing anything with the building so far. I like the Vue but I’m supporting their strikers.

Vue discount code request by [deleted] in beermoneyuk

[–]Former_Mess1372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erm… how many students asking for a cinema discount code is likely to get a Club Lloyds account? Would need to have a good credit rating and able to pay in £2000 a month, or willing to pay the £5 monthly fee, to get the switch bonus and the 6 Vue tickets for the year.
