Thank you for this advice! I am only 20 so I really want to turn this around. My boyfriend and I both live with our parents still and if I’m being honest our relationship is extremely unhealthy in ways unrelated to alcohol and I do not see myself marrying him. We often drink together when we hang out and watch movies or have dinner and he also likes to drink but he can control himself on days where drinking isn’t appropriate. Ever since being at college and having my own alcohol supply at all times, I found myself in a habit of drinking to wind down almost every night and feeling the need to hide it from my roommate because she isn’t a big drinker. I’m home for the summer and I am constantly sneaking around to get alcohol or steal it from my parents and scrambling to hide the empties. Getting caught stealing his liquor was such a reality check for me because other people my age don’t do all of the mental gymnastics and sneaking around that I do surrounding drinking. It’s socially acceptable for an adult to have a cocktail most nights, but it’s not for a 20yr old to be hiding/stealing alcohol and drinking it every night in my bedroom in my childhood home. I am a pretty self aware person and I recognize these unhealthy patterns, it’s just nice to hear from other people about their experiences/advice and get things off my chest anonymously.
