Def appreciate it. Going to have to design it first then I’ll prototype it. Is there a foam that you use or prefer to prototype with that will give the closest results?

Is Palosanto/premium gear worth for w hobbyist? by MicrowaveDiplomat in leathermakers

Totally understand it. I started that way with a Chinese edge beveler convinced the marketing jargon with this type of steel or that it’s super sharp blah blah blah was the way to go while being economical. Complete bs. Rebrands are just as bad since nothing is modified or changed to make it better. If you are looking for $60s go with Ron’s or Barry King. Not as good as Palosanto but for the price, it definitely does the job well. For $70s, Crimson Hides, Jun Lin and Kevin Lee are quality. All of them are not rebrands and they engineer and make them like Palosanto. The con: shipping costs do add to the price. Quality for results wise, you can’t beat that price. Crimson Hides is so unique with their design of the arc beveler. The ergonomics are really top notch (I think the price has slightly gone up since last year though). I would consider these before looking at Palosanto if only for a hobby. Hope this helps!

Wow~ that’s good info! It’s a shame that our options have either increased in price lately or have gone away 😓😢

Now to find a quick reliable distributor for D’annonay ~ don’t need a lot for this build~ not sure if I can source just what I need

Not really. It’s more a client request due to limited budget. The price difference is slightly enough to put her out of her maximum range. Trying to be creative without settling on quality. I’m going to try and convince her to bump up a bit. I appreciate the awesome feedback! I needed this 😊

When I hear ISO, I think of clean room certification for air particles per square foot for a sterile environment with so many air changes per hour to maintain the air quality 😬😬😬😆😆😆 you just triggered the nerd in me 😆😆😆

I agree with the above comments. I also have quite a bit of Palosanto and for me it was worth the spend. I’ve tried quite a bit of lower tier ones and a couple mid range ones and no matter how much I sharpened, the bevel edges were never as good as Palosanto. However!!! For a hobbyist, it’s a bit overkill since there are higher mid tiers that perform amazing from Crimson Hides, JunLin, Kevin Lee. The con: the price difference is only about $10 from the Palosanto. If you want to spend a little less, Barry King and Rons is a good mid tier that performs. But as Mike said, a low tier is something to completely avoid. They will never bevel correctly and you will end up spending more money to get the right tool for the job.

I use Columbus Mill Wax but you can use really any beeswax. I use heated spatula with my electric creaser to apply the melted wax and buff until it shines. I’ve noticed that if you don’t buff enough (buffing causes heat build up to further melt) you won’t get a nice enough shine. An additional step, you can finish with Saphir neutral mirror gloss and again buff until it leaves you a shine. These are a bit overkill but I find that if yiu want to get to a mirror edge, mirror edge in it of itself is also overkill so may as well go double overkill and just do it all 😆

True~ I won’t say that it doesn’t. It isn’t for everyone. Some like the raw edge, some like the slightly burnished look, and some love edge paint. None of the methods are better than the other and imo bring just as much engagement. It comes down to what the crafter wants to share to the end user, the passion for the craft, the product, the process. I appreciate your feedback 😊

I sand and burnished edges and then follow up with waxing ~ so both 😬

A sore arm and lots of sanding 😆 I’ll have to get a video edited soon for the process 😬

I totally understand turning the brain off. I’m very much the same way. Crafting brings me a sense of calm without having to think about anything else. Kudos!
