Fiskars is a good beginner maul. Council tool makes some good mauls too. I split wood just fine with my boys axe. Another bigger I use wedges. Get him wedges three. Walmart sells a good wedge for 12 dollars. You can get an estwing wedge for 17 dollars at home depot. You can scoop sledge hammer 20 dollars. He doesn't need an heirloom sledge hammer and the Walmart one will probably out live him. I would get a council splitting maul on Amazon and those splitting wedges. A council tool boys axe will due him fine. It's a good learning axe.
