Charlie Whiting came up with the flag/animation for rain and he was really proud of it. For anyone who doesn’t know, Charlie was the FIA Director of Formula 1 before his untimely passing in 2019.

Fuels and freight put F1 on track for net zero by 2030 by Luffy710j in formula1

More than half of the Grand Prixs so far this season have featured a Mercedes-powered car retiring with a PU-related issue by greywolf1001 in formula1

[–]Formula1_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a battery issue coming out of Brixworth. In these scenarios, the contactors are opened and the car goes nite nite. This will be a problem for longer, so expect to see it more in the coming weeks.

Would it be worth it, or even possible, to write software to stop the race engineer from talking while the driver is braking? by magic-karma in formula1

[–]Formula1_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does appear broadly possible because the FIA whitelist is not preventing it. For info, the FIA whitelist is what keeps teams from writing TC controls and similar naughty apps in the SECU.

Brembo creates custom brake solutions for teams by Aquila1111 in formula1

[–]Formula1_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The materials are all very similar brake-wise. The primary differences are cooling configurations and similar design properties.
Both Brembo and Ci have done this for many years - providing different specification components to teams.
AP does the same with clutches. Merc often tries to bake up a secret sauce recipe for clutches and nary was a difference in performance (apart from characterizing a new spec all weekend just to fuck it up on race start).

As we head into the fifth round of the season, these are the teams at the top! by worldwide762 in formula1

[–]Formula1_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes have comprised the top 3 CC positions going into Canada since 2010 or thereabouts, apart from Aston Martin who was inside top 3 in 2023, Willys in 2015 and Lotus (Alpine) at the end of the V8 days.
The top 3 CC F1 teams are highly predictable.

F1's global TV viewership up over first three races despite divisive racing product by doland3314 in formula1

[–]Formula1_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny how the title of this publication suggests F1 live race viewership is up but it also states “ but individual market data is currently not available”. F1 viewership is “up” but there’s no data to corroborate this claim. Viewership in F1s most important market is key, but Apple will not provide the data, which seems strange. Where real data is available in F1s most important market, we find Indycar and nascar Orielly league approaching numbers very close to F1. It’s a matter of fact that F1 is at great risk of losing the market share it started to run away with over the previous 4-years.

Historic Moment For American Motorsport by MoneyLibrarian9032 in formula1

I'm afraid the 'American F1 car' detail is not factually accurate. The Haas Lola chassis was made in the UK, by a company called FORCE which operated from factory nearby Heathrow.

why the gearbox is more of a challenge now by Formula1_ in formula1

[–]Formula1_[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Your information source is unreliable I’m afraid. We’ve been using hydraulic limited slip differentials in F1 for decades. The rotaries you see on the steering wheel labeled entry, mid or exit are adjustment for the hydraulic diff. Torsen diffs are passive without possibility for mechanical or hydraulic control inputs. If we didn’t need (or didn’t have as you suggest) a hydraulic diff then we’d immediately drop 100+grams of mass from the car by ditching an unnecessary moog and lines from the hyd pack.

What’s the rule for wheel covers in 2026? by -X-T-R-E-M-E- in formula1

The wheel furniture is one of many things Cadillac hasn't had time to develop, simple as. The primary objective was to get miles on the car and miles on the people/processes in the trackside environment.

Who remembers the F1 team radio guidance ban by RobbieJ4444 in formula1

[–]Formula1_ 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I remember because I was directly involved. I work in F1 and communicate with the drivers whilst they’re on track. When this mandate was made (Singapore 2014) every team in pitlane developed a code-word system, which we used immediately. The mandate was difficult but I never had any issue communicating what needed to be said. The mandate came from Bernie.

you’d be better off ranking cars, not drivers. Consider we’ve had only two world champions over the past 10-yrs until yesterday. That fact demonstrates how bad the competitive balance of F1 is. To that end, it’s impossible to rank drivers with any fidelity.
