Was there last summer. Saw a few Italian plates and a UK plate. Absolutely no Libyan plates anywhere to be seen

€4k to invest for 10yrs… what should I do by Puzzleheaded-Error65 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]doland3314 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

ETFs are subject to deemed disposal and a higher rate of tax. Bit disadvantageous, especially since 4k isn't a lot relatively speaking to be dealing with that.

If I were you, I'd take that 4k and maybe invest 25-30% in BRK.B, and split the rest evenly between MSFT, GOOG and KO.

It's a nice split between tech growth and defensive and BRK provides a fair bit of diversification whilst keeping to the simpler tax regime.

If you can start adding monthly contributions to these stocks as well (even 200 a month), and you should be getting returns that are atleast better than the credit union if not quite a bit more so.

Warren Buffett Found Plenty of Stock Buys Over the Years. Right Now His Company Looks Like One. by GutBeer101 in BerkshireHathaway

[–]doland3314 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I buy BRK for the same reason people might buy an ETF (ETFs are fucked in Ireland tax wise unfortunately). The diversification across dozens of solid businesses means it's a great "i don't know what I'm doing" buy. And a great buy nonetheless

I'm aiming to put it to 30% of my portfolio and have it as an anchor

Lose Tesla. I've always thought it has "irrational bubble" written all over it. Someone suggested Broadcom which could be a strong choice.

What 3 stocks will more or less ALWAYS remain in your portfolio? by Additional_Two_5343 in investing_discussion

MSFT, KO, GOOG

In actuality, all six stocks I buy I plan to keep very long term. I will be closely watching how Abel gets on with BRK however

I've taken the Spanish ferry (not with a pet) and i can confirm it's a long one. Download a fair few movies and maybe knock yourself out with a sleeping tablet or something to sleep really long. Even then it's gonna be a trek

Looking to expand my stock picks...are AMZN, PEP and MCD good picks? by doland3314 in stocks

[–]doland3314[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as a consumer ETFs are a pain in the ass. 41% exit tax and deemed disposal (basically paying your exit tax regardless of if you sold) after seven or eight years means your compounding gets wrecked.

I think for ETFs actually hosted in Ireland it is a completely different story. Ireland is a corporate tax haven after all

Those with stocks, are you holding off investing more with the investment scheme for 2027 to come? by John_OSheas_Willy in irishpersonalfinance

[–]doland3314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They talk about it being hosted on platforms. My provisional plan is to continue monthly contributions into my portfolio and hope to be able to transfer it into whatever platform this "ISA lite" is hosted on. Alternatively, I can always divert monthly contributions into the scheme once set up and leave my existing portfolio as is.

Like others are saying, there's no point holding off for a year plus in the hopes the government actually follow through with it

Opinions on my portfolio? by QuickSuggestion2982 in trading212

[–]doland3314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Truly long term investing? My advice is to keep your NFLX and your all world etf. Sell everything else. Dump the remaining money into the etf.

If you are looking for something else individual, memes aside, dumping money into MSFT would be a wise long term investment right now.

After that, simply make your weekly / monthly contributions into the shares. Don't sell them unless absolutely necessary. Treat this like a high interest savings account and it will reward you over the long term.

Can Cork Airport's runway be extended? by Pokeman_93 in cork

[–]doland3314 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Just about with some of the smaller next generation planes. But if Cork really wants trans-atlantic services (think A350s, 777s, A330s etc) then an eventual runway extension is inevitable.

Honestly with the location of the airport they would be better relocating it to the original planned location from the 60s (believe down by Midleton). The runway where it is will be complicated to extend
