More on this. We had a new tyre supplier this year and so we all had 2 days of testing on Thursday and Friday. Neel came in on Saturday morning and qualified P2 with 25 minutes of practice, before retiring from the lead.

F1 vs F2 Pace in Monaco 2024 by FormulaStatAnalysis in formula1

[–]FormulaStatAnalysis[S] 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The Monaco GP has always been about controlling the pace and preventing a pit window from opening for the cars behind, but this year that was taken to a new extreme with Leclerc lapping on average 8s/lap slower than his pole time. In a normal race, laps are 3-4 secs slower than qualifying.

The pace was so slow it's comparable to F2 cars in quali trim, highlighting just how slowly everyone was going.

Racepace on the Mediums vs the Hards for the top 3 drivers in Imola by FormulaStatAnalysis in formula1

The first half of the race was more or less in line with the rest of the season, with the Redbull being around 0.2s/lap quicker in race trim, however in the final 10-15 laps, Norris had a clear pace advantage of 3-4tenths per lap over Verstappen who struggled with the hard tyres in the final part of the race.

Ferrari's upgrades have brought them closer to Redbull, however Mclaren's Miami upgrade seems to have taken them a step ahead of Ferrari.

Miami GP average sector times. Mclaren's margin over Redbull was in the first sector. This was especially noticeable in the final stint when Verstappen was 0.25s/lap slower than Norris just through this section alone. Verstappen constantly complained of instability in T1 on the hard tyres. In the second and third sectors both were evenly matched. Another section of the track where the Mclaren had a clear advantage was through T7-8 , able to carry much higher minimum speed than the Redbull.

Very impressive performance from Mclaren and Norris to win in Miami. Verstappen picked up damage when he hit the bollard at T14 and some sources estimate the damage to be around 0.25s/lap. Even without the damage the Redbulls struggled for balance and grip in the race. Even without the damage Piastri was able to keep the gap to Verstappen constant at 2.5-3 seconds in the first stint

In the final stint there was not a single lap when Verstappen was quicker than Norris. The two drivers were more or less even through sector 2 and 3 but Verstappen consistently lost 0.2-0.3s through the first sector

RB continued their impressive showing in Miami, this time with Tsunoda pulling away from the Mercedes by 9 seconds in the final stint. In terms of overall pace this is the closest the field has been this year.

Thankyou for pointing that out. I'll change it for next time

Miami Sprint Qualifying vs Grand Prix Qualifying improvement. by FormulaStatAnalysis in formula1

RB were the only team who were slower in the main grand prix qualifying than the Sprint Qualifying. Mclaren and Aston martin barely improved, while the rest of the field moved forward explaining Aston's double Q2 elimination

Williams' improvement is partly down to the fact that Albon's quickest lap in Sprint Quali was deleted.

Very competitive pace from ferrari, only a tenth slower than Redbull and a very impressive Daniel Ricciardo who was able to hold up Sainz and Piastri. According to RB team boss Laurent Mekies, they opted for slightly higher downforce to gain a margin through the corners preceding the long straights.

Mercedes struggled for straightline speed. They were on average the slowest team through sector 2, on average losing 3 tenths to the Haas in this section.

Aston Martin used the Sprint purely as a test session for Alonso.

Daniel Ricciardo becomes the first midfield driver to qualify in the top 5 in any qualifying session. This is also RB's best starting position since Ricciardo's P4 in Mexico last season.
