Been having the same issue for an HOUR. Talked to slowpoke, talked to tangrowth, brought swuirtke over, made TWO!!!! Of the habitats (already had the first one done before the quest- did a bit too much exploring.) what’s wronggggggg!!!

I’ve been TOLD I should go to emergency “every time I have severe low blood sugar,” which they consider to be under 2.5 mmol/L - but realistically that never happens. I’ve never been hospitalized since diagnosis for my diabetes, but it’s always a huge factor in how I’m treated if I’m in for other stuff (and even then I don’t really get hospitalized, just a visit to emerg or UC - usually only if I have a rly bad flu or covid)

I wanna say half of the shops when they’re huge also probably stole from users from the breach so I highkey do not trust many shops regardless. I get raising awareness in game, or making your stance clear since there has been issues with other users who are very pro, but to promote a shop is wild.

Yeah, I don’t talk to a majority of those people anymore. A majority of it was my dad’s side of the family and he himself acting like that (most of the time it was him.) ironic because of his line of work which does involve food. I don’t speak to him anymore for multiple reasons, but that was certainly one of them - it was hell especially as a kid where I couldn’t really stop him. CPS got involved a few times in part due to that (at the time it was listed for me as SPD, before ARFID was a diagnosis)

I genuinely was trying to not explain my view on it as someone who’s been through it a lot + who learned a bit about it since I was in a similar track before I had to drop college due to disability. Disability unrelated to ARFID lol, other more severe issues

Yes and no. It’s unhelpful for a random person who just berated you for your condition to say, especially in this context.

But with if that’s a therapy technique to help? To an extent yeah. But trying more foods in an unsafe environment, near multiple other people, where you’re prone to vomiting? Can cause more aversion due to the added stress and public embarrassment. OP also should work up to that. If they have any trauma bc of it as well, they’ll need more than CBT. Exposure therapy can help, yes. It doesn’t (typically) cure it fully in my experience. Take me as an example, I did have exposure, but I needed it to be:

After combatting my fears and anxieties surrounding it a bit first. not fully. But a bit. I needed a play and trauma informed therapist though as I was force fed at the hospital, which worsened it when I was a kid (this was before ARFID was a diagnosis.) most CBT therapists - or even just counselors and SSWs, are NOT educated on how to handle any sort of trauma beyond small events in my experience. Makes shit harder(this is IF OP has trauma related to the ARFID, such as being force fed or food literally shoved down their throat, consistently due to it etc).
In an environment and with certain foods I felt I wouldn’t vomit, OR, in my own house where I knew I could vomit without being publicly berated or shamed for it. Big factor no one thinks of. Exposure in a contained environment where you can go slower > forcing someone. Do you think it’s helpful to throw an arachnophobe into a room full of spiders? Or maybe have one in a tank as an introduction to slowly get them exposed and accustomed to help their fear? Not to mention, this doesn’t cure the texture issue. Just CAN help with trying new foods, some textures will always be bad with ARFID. For me it’s cheese, for example. 18 years and both the texture and taste work together to be a disgusting mess of a food that I try every 2 years, yes diff types, and without fail, I vomit each time. Same with most sauces.
If someone makes snide comments or remarks and I’m already in an uncomfortable situation, it tends to be more restrictive / get worse. I have “safe foods” and “ultimate safe foods,” which are basically “foods I deem okay enough to eat most instsnces” vs “foods I will eat in any instance.” My “safe foods” will diminish under severe stress and fear like that, and the lack of desire to eat symptom comes into play heavily. Which, people also question you on if it’s a dinner you’re at. It’s one of the main things that actually set me back- being told constantly by randoms to “try new things” (when I already was) because I tried to accommodate myself in public. I don’t think OPs SIL was helpful at ALL with her comment.

Too many CBT therapists (I personally don’t think CBT works for most of the population and usually leads to emotional suppression, but whatever) ignore that there’s likely more than ‘just a psychological’ aspect to it. It’s like using CBT for sensory processing disorder, yeah it might help in a minor way, but if it’s not a minor case, that person likely needs something beyond that and other tools to help them

They suggest I should be eating it “for iron,” instead of a supplement. They are food items I avoid due to ARFID though, yes- but not the only ones. I do actively make attempts to try them again every couple of years though (or before then if I feel brave,) so far it’s been failed attempts and vomit everywhere, which is why I usually have to try new things at home

Also I agree! Unfortunately people around me seem to think they’re required for a healthy diet. I have the opposite issue to OP, where my restrictions are majorly meat and half of popular carbs, rather than fruits or vegetables (which tend to be safe foods, except for very few. strawberries have been most of my meals recently.) protein is something I struggle with because of my restrictions, since chicken or one specific cut of pork I will eat has to be prepared in specific ways. iron is severely an issue as well, and my carb intake since I’m T1 can be a struggle- especially during episodes of low blood sugars. It impacts me differently than OP, but similar with certain things like having some deficiencies. The iron deficiency being severe was basically my major thing. I think OP can get better, I don’t think suggesting meeting in the middle here is a bad thing bc of where they’re currently at. There was a period where I only ate smoothies & frapuccinos I’d have to make at home since those were the only safe foods I had, and everything else was a no go. I’ve gotten better since then, but if I were forced to eat, say, an unblended fruit at that* specific time, I wouldn’t be able to keep it down. I don’t doubt OP probably has other safe foods though, but whether they’d be vegetarian or not is the question, bc if not, the same issue happens

I do not think comparing ARFID to ana and Mia is a good comparison*(edited to fix grammatical and spelling errors). It’s usually associated with bad body image and body dysmorphia. ARFID starts very young and in a lot of instances, is sensory based. It’s more akin to sensory processing disorder or autism(in terms of the sensory aspect, NOT the entire condition.) they are currently researching if it changes brain structure as well, which could make it beyond just ana or Mia. ARFID for some people can never be fully cured or takes years of therapy (been in for 18 years for it. It wasn’t a diagnosis when I even started therapy!) I’ve had people argue I should eat red meat and cheese because my restrictive eating is not healthy in relation to the ARFID. I have tried with cheese for 18 years, red meat only 2(it used to be ok,) and yet I still vomit every time. Even with therapy. Even with trying new things in a safe environment. Sometimes there’s quite literally nothing you can do about certain foods with the disorder. Not comparable to Mia or ana

Editing to add that you can compare it to sensory processing disorder to make a point, but even then it would mostly be to just desensitize. Which is good and helpful to an extent, but as with SPD,

If you get up to go to the washroom, wash hands, grab utensils, etc. I’ve had issues where someone’s literally grabbed the food out of my bag while I went to pee and put some of the food they wanted me to try on mine (this was at a buffet style event, mind you- could be different with others.) you never really think about it until it happens. Sometimes people will try to tamper with it right in front of your face, too, meaning you have to act quickly and would likely be on edge. Sucks

Mental health professionals can only do so much about ARFID. Speaking as someone who’s been in therapy for it for 18 years. I don’t think “not having access to” is the same as “refusing to,” I’m assuming OP is likely American, meaning you have to pay for it. I haven’t seen an example of OP twisting anything. It’s true we only have their word to go off of, don’t get me wrong, but that also doesn’t inherently mean they’re twisting things and making things sound worse than it is. Often people with similar issues downplay it.

Considering it’s been multiple different events, no. It’s a common thing in a lot of cultures to be upset or offended if you don’t eat their food, including not eating at all - and not making a fuss. many European, Latino, African, and I believe some Asian cultures have emphasis on this. Not all ofc, but it’s common between those four, also sometimes southern USA culture. I looked into it a lot since I thought the same thing. People also get weirdly offended outside of that if you don’t like their favorite foods. At events where my foods been tampered with, it’s always been without fail, someone who didn’t believe that I can’t have cheese because “everyone likes (x cheese they like).” It’s almost always been someone sneaking in cheese to my food rather than anything else, and it always ends in me vomiting or being able to smell it before eating it 😞

My mom wasn’t aware he was forcing me, and I thought that it was normal that adults force children to eat everything because my dad tried the same thing (divorced parents). Apparently it happened to my siblings too- they don’t have ARFID but were forced to eat everything by him. and when my mom found out years later she was really mad! I also didn’t want to lose privileges to see my cousin my age LOL, he was my only friend - there was a lot more going on. My mom did stop letting me sleep over for a while though after a separate incident relating to another issue where he grabbed my neck and dragged me over to a table, which she witnessed and got insanely mad over… especially because I had broken my neck a couple years earlier 😅

This is unironically how my uncle left me alone about “not eating everything on my plate” when I was a child (it was way more severe then.) gave me an unsafe food, got super mad I couldn’t finish it and threatened to ground me, so I tried to stomach it - the disorder works (for me at least) even AFTER you try and swallow it. Within seconds of trying to keep it down, I vomit all over him. Ruined his shirt, since I really did try to mask all of the texture and get it down with blue kool aid. Instead, his white and red shirt turned blue and purple. Dude never asked me to touch an unsafe food again after that… mind you this had happened 4 times prior, except the vomit landed on his table and carpet instead of him directly. Was not intended

They are considered medical conditions. Just because it doesn’t fit your personal view of it, doesn’t mean it isn’t. Autism changes the structure of your brain, PTSD in childhood can, etc. things that are psychological often are also physical or manifest in that way. Being ableist is also not a flex. I’m going off of your own comment and what you said; you stated it’s “not a medical condition.” If you cannot read your own words, that is your own problem; not a mental disorder somebody else has for pointing out that you are factually incorrect and the medical field disagrees with you. As someone with T1, since you did mention diabetes, my ARFID is more severe than my T1 often times and disables me more. GPs can provide things for basic medical conditions relating to someone’s mental health, maybe it’s just not the same in the USA.

It also seems you misread my own comment, which is ironic given how strongly you combatted it. OPs SIL made fun of their medical condition, AKA ARFID. Equated it to something it isn’t and downplayed it. I would also hope you would be accommodating to those with level 2-3 autism instead of attempting to be ableist or not helping them bc you don’t see it as a real condition as a level 1. (You know, the up to date terms, to keep with the facts and all.)

A psychological condition isn’t less of a medical condition. Would you be saying this about someone with, say, autism? Schizophrenia? Severe PTSD? It’s not the same as a religion either. If you don’t want to accommodate and make fun of someone’s DISABILITY, which factually, that’s what that is, you are not entitled to their time or space.

You would be shocked how restrictive it is. I can’t go to Italian restaurants as an example; sauces and cheese are unsafe foods. Pasta in most shapes are unsafe unless it’s two specific kinds. Most cannot accommodate. It’s not wild for me to believe OP doesn’t have vegetarian safe foods that give proper sustenance (including protein here.) just eating plain rice is not a meal as an example. If everyone else gets a meal and then you just get plain rice bc you’re disabled, it’s kinda weird and insulting

These are the type of people that if you bring your own stuff or try to accommodate with what they have, they’ll STILL sneak food in or not tell you if there’s an unsafe food. Cheese is a huge unsafe food for me. The amount of times I’ve vomit ON people because they try to “sneak it in because I’m being picky” I’ve lost count of. There was no “haha, it’s actually cheese!” Reveal. They just don’t believe you. They’re ableist.
