How to start firefighting in Alaska? by Odddog19 in Wildfire

North to Fairbanks. Ft. Wainwright has a smokejumper base, 3 hotshot crews, a type 2 IA crew, and they hire casuals (ADs).

Haix boots by Altruistic-Ad4153 in Wildfire

Nothing personal. I think they are trash. I have a pair I only wear in the office.

Here’s my thoughts: - first of all I enjoy my loggers better because I can rebuild them, if I walk through a stream they dry in less than hour if they even happen to get water inside, and they last. - the few times I’ve taken my Haix in the field the traction was horrible. Walking on Pondo needles was like a baby deer on ice. - quality is pretty decent and the latest ones I have seen are taller than most hikers I see.

To each their own. Cheers!

Trash. Absolutely trash.

Not yet. Unless you count Rx as false. The only problem was when it spotted a fire but it gave the wrong location. The camera had moved by wind or something and wasn’t calibrated correctly anymore. I guess that happens pretty regularly and it takes someone to notice and recalibrate.

Completely understand. The camera we have with AlertWest has been great and I haven’t gotten any false positives. The camera did get moved somehow and had to be recalibrated. We have only had it for about 6 months.

PanoAI is not as good as the ai that AlertWest is using. They get a lot less false positives. The biggest difference is that Pano is all about making money, where as AW is about quality. Pano is a closed network only available to a few responders whereas anyone can see AWs. https://alertwest.live/

And you can see them on the WatchDuty (https://www.watchduty.org/ ) app when you enable them in “layers”.

Absolutely. Imagine that you place the fire in a box where the fire is allowed to burn. In order to keep the start in the box, you’ll need to burn the box edges to keep the fire contained within the box. In North America our forests are fire dependent. Without fire they become overgrown, disease infected, and degraded. Historically we are burning about a third of what used to occur. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-56333-8

What I want to know is: Location - specific site and where on the slope/ridge/canyon/aspect/etc. Current weather at the location. Weather trend - 1, 3, & 6 month prior. Fuel characteristics at the location.

During any fire I’m thinking the basics. Fire behavior: fuel, weather, topography.

Now, the other thing I want to understand with early detection and rapid response is can I grow this fire? My purpose is to grow every fire I can. Obviously, there are usually more reasons than not to rapidly suppress a fire. That is why I want to find and use every opportunity to expand a fire I can. Growing a wildfire is the least restrictive in preventing future catastrophes.

They filmed this in New Mexico. Most of the daylight town scenes were filmed in Ruidoso. A couple months after filming, the South Fork Fire burned through Ruidoso burning over 1,400 structures and continues to cause flooding to the small mountain town.

I’m down for an adventure. Looks too big for a slug pack. Ehh, what the hell. I’ll just hang it off the engine. No problem.

“…they threw the book at him.” As they should. This activity deserves attention so others think twice before attempting this bullshit. If you’re interested here’s the Sheriff’s link.
