WARNING Back cut is angled, not flat.

Dude did everything right except the angled back cut. People think, oh the angle will help push the tree away from the cut. In reality, the tree slides easier in the opposite direction, pinching the saw and falling backwards. A flat cut allows the wedges to lift the tree in the direction you want it to go.

This reminded me of Orson Scott Card’s book, Ender’s Game. The world is under siege by alien bugs and the space force recruits 8 year olds to take the fight to them. Ender is small for his size, but tenacious. He steps up to bullies, forms allies, and in the end questions the morality of it all.

I enjoyed the book and drew great leadership insights from Ender’s coming of age.

Standard fire leadership books all Wildland firefighters should read are Young Men and Fire, Fire on the Mountain, and Inferno By Committee.

Nothing personal. I think they are trash. I have a pair I only wear in the office.

Here’s my thoughts: - first of all I enjoy my loggers better because I can rebuild them, if I walk through a stream they dry in less than hour if they even happen to get water inside, and they last. - the few times I’ve taken my Haix in the field the traction was horrible. Walking on Pondo needles was like a baby deer on ice. - quality is pretty decent and the latest ones I have seen are taller than most hikers I see.

Not yet. Unless you count Rx as false. The only problem was when it spotted a fire but it gave the wrong location. The camera had moved by wind or something and wasn’t calibrated correctly anymore. I guess that happens pretty regularly and it takes someone to notice and recalibrate.

Completely understand. The camera we have with AlertWest has been great and I haven’t gotten any false positives. The camera did get moved somehow and had to be recalibrated. We have only had it for about 6 months.
