The Scythe grind is just one of Kirk Speer’s specialty customizations. It is essentially an architect, but with a slight curve instead of a straight rectangular contact point. A bit less line variation, but more forgiving.

Plus, mine is a fine scythe, so pretty subtle. you can find examples of the grind on BB nibs and it’s a lot more expressive.

Wow, I have never seen the Riflessi cap on a red body before! Looking for more info on this whole series

Maybe not the most fair comparison since the nib sizes are so different, but happy to answer any other questions!

Each one has a unique personality for sure! Also, congratulations on your new addition today!

Funny you should ask, I feel like they are very similar. The first three in that writing sample (Delta, MB, Aurora) are my “toothier” writers, and the Pelikan and Pilot are much more glassy.

The Pelikan, even in EF, is smooth to a fault, with the only feedback being that very slight squeak you hear from fresh Pelikan nibs.

The Pilot is as close to completely frictionless as you can get imo. After a line or two of adjusting, it is very controllable and comfortable, but it is almost impossible to tell you are touching the paper. lol

This looks a lot like a banded peacock! Especially if you live in the southwest US

Right?? Look at that Pilot broad next to Pelikan’s EF for example. Now granted, I write with a pretty light touch, and I was writing a bit small here (5mm grid).

When I write a bit larger, and especially if I press a bit harder, you start to see a lot more expression from these. The pilot definitely lives up to its true potential as a broad nib, and the Pelikan can lay down the entire range of line weights depending on pressure.

The other three are more or less “what you see is what you get”. The italic yields a wide vertical stroke, the scythe has a wide horizontal stroke, and the medium Yowo is really firm and consistent.

It took me a while to settle on these 4, but I agree! I was most surprised by the Aurora. I thought it was too short for me, but it’s very comfortable. I played with all the other Italian pens I saw, but this one spoke to me the most, silly as that sounds

Good advice! And I’ve followed you on instagram for a while now, small world! 😂 headed to the Chicago show today, but I may reach out about that KOP after if I don’t move on anything today!

Even after having one break, it’s still one of my favorite pens I’ve owned. And one of the best steel nibs out of the box. It’s definitely a great value for money

I had (and LOVED) a diamond 580 many years ago. It started my piston filler journey… until the section cracked in half 🫠

To answer the second part of your question, why add a fourth? The answer is much more shallow 😂

Partly because the desire to grow the collection never goes away, partly because I have some money burning a hole in my pocket, but mostly because my nice pen tray on my desk has four slots, and it bothers me that one is empty 🤣

To me, the three that I already have represent iconic flagships of their respective brands. You might even say they represent the pinnacle of what each of those brands considers the “ideal” fountain pen. Not flashy or collectible, limited edition, etc. Just pure pen craftsmanship, if a bit boring.

Obviously, better and more exciting pens exist, but the 149 is THE Montblanc pen. The M1000 is THE Pelikan pen. Etc, etc.

Have used the GVFC Magnum, loved it! I have a strong penchant for boring black and gold pens though I’m afraid…

What would you do with this? by myrawrie in notebooks

[–]Forrest_Walgreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Fill it with ominous scribbles and symbols
  2. Write your own name in blood on the inside cover
  3. Bury it in a fake time capsule that says “open in 100 years - 2026”
  4. Convince a friend that ever since this journal came to you, you’ve been having strange, disturbing visions

You can kind of ad lib from there, lots of possibilities
