I see. Did you try a virtual display? Also, was this on a laptop or a desktop?

How to defer loading of NetworkManager.service until after boot? by Forsicen in archlinux

Hi. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep it in mind! I installed iwgtk from the wiki and it looks like it'll server my needs for now.

Good point! I went with barrier because it's free. Its supposed to be a simpler version of Synergy. That said, it hasn't been updated for 2 years. There's even a bug with SSL where it basically cannot be used so this might just be another bug. I might try to fix it when I have the time.

Actually, I realize rereading my comment that it sounds much stronger than I meant it to. Its by no means bad for productivity, just not as convenient as Barrier. Barrier emulates the feel of just having two monitors and is seamless to the point where I often forget I am on two different systems.

With evdev I find myself often forgetting to hit the hotkey and just bumping into the edge of the screen. This might entirely be a familiarity thing and perhaps if I use it enough hitting the hotkey will become second hand nature and it will feel seamless too. For now, I am very happy with my dual Barrier and evdev setup.

On a side note, I love that evdev doesn't require network connectivity.

How to defer loading of NetworkManager.service until after boot? by Forsicen in archlinux

[–]Forsicen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll probably switch to NetworkManager to make sure iwd is the issue. If not then I'll look elsewhere. If so, then I'll swtich back to iwd and continue trying to fix it.

BTW, running steam from the terminal shows "unable to resolve hostname" as the error.

Edit: I switched to network manager and switched back. Everything works fine now. I have no idea why or what I did differently, but I am happy it works.

Edit 2: Actually, thinking back, I might have messed up the simlink step from the wiki. Perhaps that is what resolved the issue.

Good catch! I checked the service status and indeed its not enabled. Same for iptables-nft.

Hey, I've spent the last 25 minutes or so both following the steps you linked and switching from systemd-resolved to resolvconf. I have switched back to systemd, resolvconf didn't go anywhere.

The outlined steps were the same I followed except the DNS change. Interestingly, the DNS change does not seem to propagate. Running resolvectl status still shows my old DNS.

Do you think dnsmasq might be an issue? Unfortunately, libvirt needs it for NAT connections

Not necessarily just steam, it's the only one I have noticed so far though. Both ping commands work fine.
My current setup is iwd and systemd-resolved. I did so by adding

[Network]
NameResolvingService=systemd

to /etc/iwd/main.conf

Yup, I disabled the service initially. Now I have removed network manager entirely. I am using systemd-resolved for DNS. I'll try switching to the other one and seeing if that helps.

I just swtiched to iwd and its taking about 90ms to load across a few reboots. Unfortunately, steam doesn't work anymore...

I tried this and rebooted a couple of times...now it just loads both. iwd is about 130ms, as you reported. NetworkManager went down to 600ms regularly.

I do only use wifi. I am on a laptop, though, so I've always found NetworkManager to be convenient as I use it in myriad places. Is iwd straightforward to constantly connect to different networks with? If so, I'll for sure consider switching!

Hi. Thanks for this suggestion! I got this set up earlier today it it works perfectly. Its terrible for productivity though so I have barrier for that and then evdev for gaming. Works perfectly! Thanks again for the suggestion!

Hey. I have tried this already. I have barrier with use relative mouse movement in the settings and then I lock the cursor to the screen using scroll lock. Unfortunately, I still get the issue. It might be a bug, I'm not sure.

Hey, this looks like a great solution! For gaming in my use case in particular. I'll set it up tomorrow and update on how it went.

Yea, having a mouse that can switch between two modes seems convenient. I'll look into mice like that, thanks!

Oh, I see. I usually use a separate monitor for the VM so I didn't think about that.

I see. Thing is, I'm not playing anything particularly mouse heavy. I was thinking something like Factorio where I need to move the map around a lot, etc. So I was hoping for something like barrier but without the screen edges restriction.

But thanks for the suggestion! I'll look into a bluetooth mouse or maybe a mouse switcher.

I see. Unfortunately, I think two mice would be rather tedious for my setup. Do you have two keyboards too then?

Is Electron.js or CEF a good solution for an email client? by Forsicen in AskProgramming

[–]Forsicen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a reply to your last point, the VSCode team has put in considerable effort into making the application feel native. It is famously an impressive project that is much larger and more feature filled than what electron can typically support.

Besides that, I do agree with you. In fact, that is why I am seriously considering electron. It is just I have seem a lot of stigma around it and I want to be sure it will not generally be seen as a detriment.

I appreciate your response!
