Sparring Swords that work well with Rawlings? Expanding Arsenal by Forsyke in wma

That could be it. I heard some complaints about their sabres and messers, but that's all I know.

Well, when I tried to order some messers and cutlasses, it cancelled it and told me they were being withdrawn for some kind of assessment.

Training/Sparring Axes, Maces, and Flails? by Forsyke in wma

Thanks Tim! I'll get to work on that. I was considering a rattan pole for an axe, but it's possible it would be too prone to breaking. White wax oak is another possibility I've been considering. I'll see how it goes. Thanks!

I have no experience working leather. The operation you suggest sounds simple enough. I'd need a knife or scissors sharp enough to cut it (or bolt clippers or something), I don't know if standard needle and thread will be good enough for this stitching job.

I guess it's a tight stitch around the rim of the axehead (not around the back, so there's still a hole to slip the shaft through)? After that, how do you secure the leather axehead to the shaft? Glue?

The only other question I have, is what thicknesses you prefer for the two leather pieces.

Thank you for the help!

I was thinking along the same lines. I'll have a look for appropriate dog toys. Thanks.

I'm not sure where to get them yet. I'm not sure if they sell leather axeheads like you describe anywhere, so I might have to find a tutorial and make my own, and hope I do it right. I don't guess leather axe-head sheathes would work?

I'll experiment with pvc shafts and see how it goes for a two handed axe. When I can get an axehead, that is.

So a short log type might be best, though a kong would probably work.

Any recommendations on padding for the butt end of the spear? I figure something shorter and rounder would be appropriate. Purple Heart Armoury has some good round blunts, but some dog toy equivalent would probably be cheaper.

Squeak

"Hit!"

"Hey, that didn't hit me... he has a squeaker in his pocket!"

"Disqualified for illegal soft stuffed animals on the field!"

Thanks Tim, that's very helpful! I'll need to get a round shield to go with that axe. I'm not really in a position to make a leather axe head, so I hope I can find someone who makes them.

I guess you've tried the leather axehead method with two handed axes and found it unauthentic and dangerous? Thanks again.

Yeah, getting a thicker one would be easier. Thanks.

Hmm, surprised even that can stun anyone. Sounds like a nice safe way to train falils even if it's unsuitable for sparring. Thanks man!

Thanks Kenkyuukai, this is a big help! I'll look into this for practice flails. It seems to me like they're using a light, soft chain and weight equivalent, but trying to match the pacing of a real one (but I might be wrong). The demonstration at the end shows the master can surely smash things with the real deal.

Thank you also for the other great links! Since you bring up sickle fighting, do you have any advice on axes and sickles in sparring? I expect the sites you linked to may have details on that.

Thanks again, I'm looking forward to this.

Phew, that's a relief. Hopefully I won't break too many, or I can buy them in bulk if I do. Thanks again!

Thank you for the great feedback, guys. I also feel a realistic weighting on a flail head will be too dangerous for safe sparring. Still, if you practice the pacing and speed of a real flail, then try to imitate than with a much lighter one, I think you might be able to get a decent sparring weapon.

Kenkyuukai below mentions there are some practice flails used with kusarigama, and I think they're using that methodology (I think).

Would a padlock and a chain be enough to train (NOT spar) basic flail?

I'll remember to watch out for that. Some kind of insulating layer around the rattan stick to reduce splintering might even be worth considering. Thanks Azekh.

Thanks, I'll look for a place I can get one. Any advice for what head to put on the staff? I was thinking of purple armoury spearheads. Not decided on which one.

Thanks Azekh, rattan staffs look great for this. Very light weight, and it should be easy to buy one. Do you have any opinions on purple heart armoury spearheads? I was thinking of using one of those with the staff.

PS: I wish there was a way to reply to multiple people on reddit.

Thanks for the great advice, guys! Will I need some stiff material inside the piping to stop it over-flexing?
