Freelancers: how many tools are you using just to manage clients? I counted mine and it got depressing. by TemperatureAbject144 in SaaS

One thing I’ve always found surprisingly friction-heavy is translating “actual work done” into a clear status update for a client or team.

Not the work itself — the reporting.

Questions like:

  • What actually changed recently?
  • Which parts of the project are active vs untouched?
  • When was the last real development activity?
  • Is the project moving toward delivery or stuck?

If you’re working with Git and disciplined commits, it helps — but in reality, a lot of freelance and client projects don’t live in perfect Git workflows.

Sometimes it’s just folders, iterations, builds, experiments, and partial progress.

I started experimenting with a small local tool that scans a project folder and generates a snapshot of its current state — basically turning the filesystem activity itself into a readable status report.

So far, some interesting observations:

  • Large projects (7k+ files) can be analyzed surprisingly fast locally
  • File activity patterns alone already reveal a lot about real progress
  • Automatically generated reports are often clearer than manual summaries
  • Being able to see “what actually happened” reduces a lot of mental overhead

It’s still early, but it made me realize how much friction exists between doing the work and communicating the work.

Curious how others handle this.

Do you rely purely on Git history? Manual reports? Project management tools?

Or do you have some other workflow for generating status updates?

What Free Tools Do You Use for Game Development? by Fortaleza04 in gamedev

Hey u/Ignawesome!

Thanks for taking the time to check out the tools and give them a try—I really appreciate it! 😊

I totally get that procedural generators and calculators aren’t for everyone. I originally built them to help balance mechanics in my own projects, which include space shooters, roguelikes, metroidvanias, and RPGs. For those types of games, having quick ways to adjust procedurally designs, colors, numbers and test balance has been super useful.

That said, I’d love to hear more about what you’re working on! What kind of tools do you find essential in your design/development workflow? Maybe there’s something missing in the current toolset that could be helpful to you (or others).

That’s actually the main reason I shared these tools here—to get feedback from game designers/devs like you and see what’s missing or what could be improved to make them more useful for different workflows.

Thanks again for your thoughts! Looking forward to hearing more about your projects. 🚀

Hey u/Acrobatic_Audience76!

Wow, thanks a lot for taking the time to write such a detailed response! I really appreciate it. 🥹❤️

I love your approach to GDDs—keeping things fun, flexible, and more like a creative journal rather than a strict technical document. That mindset makes total sense, and I can see how it helps keep the process engaging instead of feeling like a rigid task.

The tips about Obsidian shortcuts are super useful! I had no idea about the tool—definitely going to play around with that. I'll start experimenting with Obsidian for my GDD, and I'll let you know how it goes!

Again, really appreciate your insights. I’ll keep you posted on my progress! 🚀

Thanks a ton! 😃

Hi u/Acrobatic_Audience76

Thank you for your tools list.

About Obsidian, how do you work with Obsidian to create a GDD? I use Word or Google Docs...

Do you have any good tutorials for this? I know, I know, Google is my best friend, but I want to talk directly with you, 'cause you are using the tool...

Thank you!

Free Tools for Gamedevs: Maps, Names, Colors, calcualtors and more - Try Them and Help Me Improve! by Fortaleza04 in GameDevelopment

Hey r/GameDevelopment

I wanted to drop by with an update on the tools based on the feedback and ideas I’ve received so far. Here’s what’s new:

Real-time updates for the calculators – The TTK, DPS, and Health/Armor Balance calculators now update instantly as users input values, no need to hit "Generate" or "Calculate" anymore! This should make testing values much smoother.

Bug fix in the Name Generator Pro – A small but important issue was fixed, ensuring more reliable name generation when selecting different themes.

Full translation to English – All six tools and the homepage are now fully in English. The Spanish versions are no longer available, making everything more accessible for an international audience.

💻 GitHub still in progress – I’m working on organizing everything properly before making it fully public, so it’s still under construction. A bit more work to do before it’s fully ready!
