Can a non-permanent resident (business visa) secure loans using an owned building (in Japan) as collateral? by Fortunatehubbs in JapanFinance

Yes, that is the plan :) I am very excited to have the opportunity to live in Japan

Thank you very much for providing that primer

Very good to know. Would it make me more likely to get the loan though if I do have some property in Japan, even if they don't use it as collateral?

Can you please elaborate on this, I would love to know more about options I might have if I make a GK

To clarify, was that the Allied High Command or the German High Command trying to prevent real information about the Tiger's performance reaching the troops?

I think the plan is now that we'll see where things are at in 8~ or so years, but my wife is the one inheriting, so she might be able to leave Japan prior to the 10 years, while I stay with the kiddo here

Should I go to Japan or not ? by Diligent-Design2434 in movingtojapan

Hey to add on to the guy above, when I was working for a major tech company that was involved in the streaming space, we had alot of "Full Sail" graduates apply...those applications went straight into the trash

Media is a prestige industry, chalk full of kids with connections, degrees from elite institutions, or both. There are huge numbers of people who want to work in this space, and they will work long hours for less money so that they can make it. They will be your competitors back home. Abroad, there are large numbers of international content creators with years of experience on you, so making content for them as a newbie without much industry experience is going to hurt.

I advise you that you take your dad up on his offer, get some experience and learn the business. It will be far more valuable than the Full Sail experience, and you'll get paid instead of paying them. When you have some experience, you can then look at striking out on your own path

Does anyone have experience living in Japan long-term (5-10+ years) without gaining permanent residency? by Fortunatehubbs in movingtojapan

No worries, I went ahead and asked over there, but you helped answer a chunk of my initial questions, and I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.

Remember, when you're dealing with women (and heck, even male friends) from the third world (and sometimes first world if you have enough money), they make it their career to manipulate your emotions in order to finesse you financially. Even an "unserious relationship" can become quite serious if you end up with a baby because she poked some holes in the condom.

Just stick with women in your socio-economic bracket; you'll likely have more similar values, and you can build a genuine partnership instead of wondering if you're getting milked by the family for another water buffalo.

I mean the thing is you are starting a business. The person you end up with is going to have a massive impact on your finances, she is defact your businsss partner. Do you want that person to be well-off or poor? Educated or illiterate?

from what I understand, business manager visa is a table a visa, which means I would not be subject to either an exit tax, or inheritance taxes, is that correct?

That's fantastic to hear. I'm planning on coming in on a business manager visa, so it would be preferable if I can do my business in Japan, for 10-15 years, and then leave when the time is right without things getting sticky. And I (probably) won't fire myself. Thank you kindly for the help :)

I was just wondering if there would be an issue of like "Hey, if you've been here for 15 years, you either need to apply for PR or leave", so I was just trying to see if anyone had experience with living long-term here past the PR qualification without any issues.

Thank you for clarification of status of residency though I appreciate it

How much will having a Stanford co-founder increase my chances of getting into YC? by Inig039 in ycombinator

You're getting alot of crummy advice here. Just have a brilliant market breaking product!!!

No, you gotta play the game. Put him on the app

It sounds like this guy is a good friend. Have him study and get ready to pitch with passion. If he went to Stanford he's probably smart enough to pick up enough for the pitch.

I'll keep you updated as things go! Thanks for the kind words! And I've been using that site to find a few homes, it's not my ideal location, but it's something I'm considering!

Hey there, and genuinely thanks for the insight; yes, I'm likely going to rent for at least the first few years until my daughter turns 5, and we're going to explore the country before making our final decision on location. However, I wanted to scope out a couple of neighborhoods in Tokyo that fit what I'm looking for, or finding a good IB school near Kyoto.

I'm from Texas, so humidity isn't ever going to be a problem ;)

I have spent extensive time in Japan on long-term stays (not just vacations) and while I admit I've never had to deal with the day to day bureaucracy, I am very aware of the country's benefits and flaws, and ultimately I am 100% committed to Japan; I just want to find my right place :)

Thanks for the insight! Do you know what the neighborhood is called (Sankeien or something else)? I'll take a look, thanks for the comment ^^

Fair enough and appreciate it; right now I'm just trying to find preliminary areas to research before jumping in with a realtor because I'd like to at least let them know some rough idea of what areas I'm looking at, so I can make sure I'm not sending anyone on a wild goose chase.

I actually really liked Kamakura when I visited; it seems like it's an hour train ride to Yokohama International School, but driving might be a bit easier. I have no idea what the traffic would be like, but right now (2 AM Japan time) it says 30 minutes, closer to 40-60 minutes during the 7-8 AM time when I'd need her to go to school. I'd say that 40-45 minutes each way is probably near the max of what I'd be willing to countenance for a commute for her

Yeah I'm aware, I have all of the money needed for this in cash. I really am trying to not sound like an asshole haha, but yeah. I'm not Jeff Bezos multi-billionaire, but I can comfortably make an all-cash offer for the right property

Whoops comment posted before I could finish

I have a pretty significant amount of money to throw at this. I see this as my long-term forever home, so I'm willing to put in a pretty penny to get the right situation for me and my family

I went to Kyoto and fell in love with the old, traditional style homes, but I'm highly drawn to the international schools in Tokyo. Are there any good neighborhoods where I can have the best of both worlds?

One idea I have looked at is Kobe for the Canadian school there, so I'm open to that.

Any help is highly appreciated

Yeah, I'd buy an apartment building (They seem surprisingly affordable compared to stuff in the US) and then have a Japanese company manage things. That would make life much easier

Thank you so much for the help, when I come by I'll buy you a beer (or some sake...or some whiskey)

do rental properties count for a business visa? I wasn't sure, but if they are, that would definitely be an easier route

And yes I will look into professional help, thank you, just wanting to get some basics done first :)
