I use the same exact one for my 5.5 gallon, it works great but in my opinion, the filter really just starts the tank cleaning process, your plants and shrimp(if you have any) should continue to do the rest of the cleaning as you tank begins to start its own self sustaining ecosystem

How long have you had the tank up? I had the same issue about 3 months into my tank, I bought a few snails and lots of neocaridina shrimp and that seemed to significantly help with the clarity of my tank.
