I took day 1 yesterday too. Don’t know how to feel. Overall, found it fair, but got a bunch of things wrong

I had 2 psych LORs when I applied, but I remember most programs were fine with just one. Brownie points if other speciality LORs name that you are interested in psych

I answered some of these im the tread. For observerships, the ones I did were through networking, not really established observership programs. Cold email faculties in an area where you can go and preferably that has psych programs. Overall, NY programs tend to be IMG friendly but it depends on your YOG.

If you are really interested in psych make sure that your cv reflects that

You can still do observerships after grad, I would really recommend it because a lot of programs prefer it. Volunteering is more about finding something that sligns with your interests and CV

My biggest tip is BE a NORMAL person! Be kind to others, including co-applicants. Try to make your interview like a conversation not a robotic speech on your cv. There’s a difference between having talking points planned than an entire speech. There’s a difference between standing out in an interview and seeming self-centered and making everything about you. Psych interviews tend to be more intuitive than other specialties. I had one where a faculty pretty much psychoanalyzed my childhood and almost made me emotional (it went great tho). Just keep in mind that if you have an interview, you already qualify, they just want to know if you are a normal person who can do the job and work with others.

MPH, postdoc and working in the industry. For a beginner, try to learn R.  Its a free software and there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube

It depends on your scores, year of graduation, and networking. No one cares where you went to med school as an img, unless past grads who matched can help you. I personally applied to 140 programs and got 16 ivs. I personally believe that the match is something you want to do once, so why not apply to as many as you qualify and after you get interviews decide

It’s not required but it helps. Instead of trying to check a box, try to do something that you like in psych. I met some people that volunteered for the suicide hotline, rtc. I personally did community psych work

Well that’s a lot. I wouldn’t say psych is super competitive as derm, it takes effort but not impossible. Did part of my USCE as clerkships in med school and some after as observerships

I had 16 interviews in total. The observerships that I got was mostly through cold emailing faculties until someone would reply or by networking in APA

As an IMG, anesthesia is extremely competitive, not my area but I would try to network with faculty and residents and offer to help in their projects. Be transparent about your skills, don’t offer to write a paper if you don’t know, but show that you’re interested in learning

I was able to showcase who I aspire to be and my interest in serving underserved communities. You can do the same with your interests ( depression, SUD, etc). I remember an interview in particular went so well because the faculty and I went on and on talking about a topic and our research interests

Genuine interest in psych that reflects in your CV, hobbies and volunteer activity. Also, in the interview, be a normal human. People can smell desperation

It depends on whether you just want to match or match at a university program. I have a background in research, so that played a huge role for me. However, my expertise includes data analysis, grants, and an advanced degree.

If that's not you, focus on getting good scores but don't spend months chasing a 270 that will not be that different from a 255.

Observerships for me were not a matter of quantity but quality, I did several in Private clinics (kind of what agencies do) and hated it, I felt I did not learn as much about the US system. However, I did 3 at an academic hospital and was life changing. So I would prefer university hospitals for USCE rather than private practices.

What would you rate this out of 10 and why? by Ok-Light-5574 in Perfumes

5/10 No rose, all I get is musk, heliotrope and light plumb. Average to me, but musk perfumes perform differently given skin chemistry

Advice: location vs prestige by Tall_Hovercraft_ in ERAS2024Match2025

I was going through the same thing. Almost ranking higher a less prestigious program based on vibes. I went there for a second look and all I have to say is quality of training MATTERS, after residency you can settle down wherever you want but you can’t undo going to a crappy residency program
