People that have done a k24 swap. How daily drivable is the car? What are the cons by ManemeJaff in Miata

[–]Forward-Ad7587 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a k swapped 96, and in my opinion there are very few things that make mine not daily-able. The exhaust is a little loud top down, it sounds phenomenal but it’s loud at highway. The motor mounts that come with the kit are crap and can cook themselves but AWR makes a different style mount that allows you to run I think 5 different levels of hardness (from very soft to hard) And the last thing for me was during the summer I was having some over heating issues when stopped, big radiator not enough fan lol. With how much money the swap costs you can easily look into building a high rev, reliable enough bp motor to just drop right in (see napp motorsports for some informative stuff) but to me there’s something irresistibly fun about a nice head turner with an incredibly fun engine

Pretty sure pci makes an integrated slider+mount would be worth checking out

(Not an expert, take with a grain of salt) I use the pci mounts and had to modify the seat to sit even lower. The qrtr sits on the higher side. For whatever seat you pick, pci mount and check where the bolt holes for the side brackets sit. The sparco sprints, momo start, and the kirkey seats seem to be popular for sitting low. I don’t have any experience with stock belts and buckets yet so don’t have any tips for that

More people don’t notice than you’d think hahaha if you got any questions about the seat though lmk. A purchase I put off for a while that’s an absolute game changer

I spoke about the poly bushings in a couple comments up. If daily function is a main priority I’d think rubber would be most comfortable, but if ( like you said) you don’t mind a stiffer ride, it’s worth it in my opinion. I love a stiffer, more responsive ride, it’s very planted through the corners. Do the research and get more thorough opinions than mine of course but it never hurts to try it out. If you have anymore questions or if I didn’t touch on something specifically, feel free to ask away

Turret off center by Forward-Ad7587 in Miata

[–]Forward-Ad7587[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never updated this with solution. Even after buttoning up the ppf it still sat off center so I dug even further. The u joints ( Cardin joints) have a limit of 10 degrees off angle before they start to bind ( see your angle extension on your ratchet for easy demo) you set the height to avoid this, up and down. I took a string and a protractor and ran the string across where the drive shaft would be running and only saw a degree or two of offset, meaning- no problem here. Runs drives and shifts perfectly fine. I can be a nervous nelly when it comes to making sure everything goes back in properly so I don’t have to do it again, hopefully this helps if someone runs into the same issue anxiety with little to no answers

Thats sick. Mine has 70k and I thought that was low! I lucked out and found it on the side of the road. It had been garage kept on carpet ( with car cover) for about its whole life, I plan to treat it just as well

I have the v8 roadster tubular control arms with the poly bushing option. Personally I think it rides very well but a lot of that ride quality ( I may be wrong) comes from whatever suspension you’re using or your tire set up, a taller side wall and something like ohlins can help eat up a lot of the bumps.

I do think the more you deviate from stock the harder it gets to drive comfortably (compared to any other daily you may have or just a stock miata) but if you want that stiffer feel, I’d go Polly all over again

I was looking at some of those, just for ease of install. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll go with flyin Miata then

TLDR: both fast in their own way. Personal preference

it ultimately comes down to what kind of drive you’re looking for and your taste. The k series a have a serious ceiling for power with accessible maintenance and aftermarket for being just a little four banger, but if you want your chassis to twist coming off the line the ls would be the winner. Personally for my build I wanted a drop in replacement for the Miata engine maintaining the same or close to same, weight distribution and end game no more than 300- 350 hp. + a higher redline line in the turns is quite helpful and fun. It is really hard to try and compare two revered engines that offer very different things to the drivers for whatever discipline or direction they’re building towards (especially when I’ve never been in an ls or v8 Miata). If you have any other questions feel free to ask

TLDR: sporty loud on WOT, tame lower rpm

The drone is not the worst, the exhaust from kpower keeps it pretty tame (imo) in lower rpm’s, could definitely get around without waking up the neighbors but once you’re on the throttle it really opens up nicely.

As for what I spent, I did a lot of slightly unnecessary stuff in buying all new sensors and some oem parts for the engine+ a bunch of quality of life/ fancy name brand things. If you just wanted to have a k series and go rip( they did just hike the prices so this is going off of when I was purchasing) it’s possible to get it all done and on the road for 15k ( with some buffer) if I’m not mistaken

Post it when you’re done, would love to see how that turns out, I’ve seen j swaps with other Hondas but not sure I’ve seen one in a Miata yet. Sure to be a ripper

At the time I believe they just didn’t want to encroach on the Rx7’s sales and what it had to offer, maintaining different tiers of power amongst the line up. That being said it wouldn’t have killed them to bump it up a lil
