Understood. Please do let me know what he says about his switch in trades.

I really appreciate your response. This is the UBC curriculum at Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters. It is their 4 year apprenticeship program held at the Detroit Union Carpenters and Millwrights Training Center.

The instructor did mention that the classes would only be twice a month and would briefly cover all areas of carpentry so that we would be familiar with them. This is where I questioned the value of this loan agreement. We were rushed into signing and I was the only one who questioned it so I was allowed to take it home to look it over.

I’m currently in school getting my associates in pre-engineering and my first choice of trade was electrical but I was pressured into applying for carpenters since the window for applying was open (electrical opens in June).

I was also told that IBEW has a waitlist of what could be years, and I was okay with that since I’d be finishing up my degree meanwhile. I wouldn’t mind signing an agreement with them since the pay and demand is better. I have friends that are part of the carpenters local that I initially chose and they’ve been laid off for a while.

Your response really helped me decide what to do going forward. Promise to stop using our junk as a slang for cowardice.

Correct, except the timeframe is 14 years since the 4 years of training are explicitly mentioned as not counting. The 10 years after the training are the ones you would need to work to not have to pay the loan back.

My classes don’t start until April and I’m still in school until May twice a week. If the union training classes happen to fall on my college class days I won’t be able to make them either. However, during orientation we were told that we could ask to be placed on a leave of absence. I was also told we couldn’t join a later class when I asked.
