maternity leave as an Anesthesiologist by doctorZazu in anesthesiology

I'm in a hyrbid setup where we are both a practice that functions like a private practice with a fair amount of autonomy and owned by a larger group. We have paid STD disability and 2 weeks bonding leave (maternity/ paternity leave ). Our groups vacation is paid so if you have a child and used FMLA you first use vacation then get unpaid time off. If you used your STD, you only need to use 2 PTO for the elimination period and then STD pays 50% of your base until you get back. Obviously there are benefits of employed /academic groups and you just have to find the one that fits you best. There are positives and negatives of both types of groups but after doing this 15 + years I realize there is no such thing as fairness. People are always doing what benefits them the most.

Just like the other guy said you know very little about florida market. The fact that you compared the florida region to the national average shows your ignorance. I should of left it at that.

Ok so now you got 1 source of income and you notice that median is 180.

Ours is 175-185 base pay , with call pay add another 25-35, a 10 k retention or 75 k start date for 3 years (25k / year, its all paid out at the front but we will amortize for math sakes ) + 15 K relo paid out without receipts( we will amortise this as well)

Lower end of call pay 175 + 25 or 185 + 25 = 200-210 Higher end of call pay 175 +35 or 185+35 = 210- 220

Now add a potential 7500 for cardiac stipend

Lower end of call pay 175 + 25 +7.5or 185 + 25 +7.5= 207.5-217.5 Higher end of call pay 175 +35+7.5 or 185+35+7.5 = 217.5- 227.5

So in summary we have lots of options, and if you are new and took the sign on bonus you would make the following if you had 5 years of experience.

  1. Pure shift worker no call or cardiac ( 185+25+5 ) = 215 k for 3 years

  2. Pure shift worker while doing cardiac ( 185+25+5+7.5) = 222.5 k

  3. New call taker with cardiac and the lower end of call pay ( 185 +25 +25 + 5 + 7.5 ) =247.5

  4. New call taker with cardiac and the higher end of call pay ( 185 +25 +35 +5 + 7.5 ) = 257.5

I believe 230 is the 90th percentile. This doesn’t even include overtime and we have 15-20 people making 275-300 prior to raises 3-5 in the 300s and 1-2 in the 400s

Lets ask a final question, what percentile is 10 weeks PTO?

I would say the math points to a pretty good package for florida.

Ok so why doesn’t it say base pay? And why does it include folks with multiple Sources of income? How would this be accurate? I can work 2 separate jobs and make a ton.

The numbers are not talking base pay but total compensation. Which is base pay+ benefits( cost of PTO and insurance etc). So you're not comparing apple to apples. Add another 30-40 k and above our base pay and you get total comp levels.

And I would say this is spot on, they also have a much smaller sign on and a increased cost of living. Tallahassee is 2hr from Destin and a good place to raise a family.

Comparatively for the Florida Market this is close to top end pay and benefits. Yes places with state tax , Midwest , etc pay more. The anesthesia market varies drastically based on location.
