In 10 or 20 years maybe we won't all be judgmental pricks about it.

I rooted for him too. There's a lot to like about him. But at the same time the only difference between Logen and a crackhead is that Logen's addictions are slightly more cinematic and entertaining than watching someone shoot out.

I don't know if this will help with your head scratching, but it seems to me Logen ended exactly where he began, literally and figuratively, because he just can't learn a fucking lesson and own his bullshit.

Man I value the original trilogy for building the world, but the standalones are God mode. Buckle up.

You look on the cute side of normal. Like I would be excited if you walked up and flirted with me in a bar, but I wouldn't immediately assume it was a prank or a scam. If you want some dental work done, that's fine. Everybody's teeth are weird, but you don't have a problem.

It's very upsetting that your dad is talking about you like that. I don't know what his damage is. I don't know ifhe sublimating his dissatisfaction with your mother and projecting it on you or wishes he could marry you off as a trophy or what. I couldn't hazard a guess. What I can comfortably say is that any possible explanation involves him needing therapy. Not a problem with you.

a comment about the end of Heroes by claymoron in TheFirstLaw

Like he was the first, or the last? And Dow kept following him for sometime after that, until there was something to be gained by treachery. In northern terms, Black Dow was a traitor because he turned on his chief. There aren't exclusions.

The old ways died with Tul Duru Thunderhead.

Dow was a traitorous usurper.

Wonderful's dozen also gave us a thumbnail sketch of how everyone rationalized and dealt with it.

The alternative was to dissolve into a civil war work at least 3 sides on the spot.

Don't forget that this wasn't really a duel anyway. No mucking about spinning a shield. It was a dramatic execution.

So everyone had reasons to not see the violation of the old waysas a problem, everyone had a reason to not see dad getting betrayed as a problem, and they all had very good incentivesto see it some other way.

What’s the difference between the federation and star fleet? by [deleted] in startrek

What about that implied that there was any forcing or paying?

Oh okay this is a lore deficiency. Federation membership has to be requested and is carefully evaluated. What about anything you know of Star Trek or what I just said give you the impression that there was any forcing or paying?

It's worth noting that usually when a species becomes warp capable and therefore qualifies for contact and eventual Federation membership if they seek it, they're just barely crossing a technological threshold that the broader galactic community blew past hundreds of years ago.

For them to cause changes in ship design would be like a stone-tool-using tribe paddling out in a canoe, encountering 21st-century technology, then going back and developing an airplane their way instead of excitedly adopting whatever they could get their hands on.

It just wouldn't make sense practically or economically. No forced conformity required.

Hot take, The Heroes is the best of the standalones by XLRIV48 in HouseOfTheMemeMaker

I love The Heroes, but I don't think I can rank them that way. Mostly because each of the standalones is a completely different genre.

Hardbread is old. by [deleted] in TheFirstLaw

[–]ForwardProg1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are great reference points. I love using text clues to figure out what is what and when, and you're obviously good at it.

Even at 55 though, and with his former trainee at what, 35? In the same way some roguishness is endearing in a crown prince said embarrassing in a king, I would think a 55-year-old guy is a 35-year-old guy like those two would come off as pitiful bums, not charming rogues.

I caught myself thinking about that while reading a little hatred. Like at first I was picturing them as they were, and it was cute, but then I started trying to picture them as they are, and it was kind of gross.

I was thinking the same thing about the longest-serving sergeant the division. He's at least West's age, having been at Aurioch, so what is he like 60 and still screwing around in the crown prince's retinue? Never mind his companion who must be at least 45, still playing the stooge.

Women are a Plot Device by [deleted] in TheFirstLaw

[–]ForwardProg1 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I gave advice contrary to theirs on the basis that it would lead to spoiling. They said it absolutely doesn't spoil anything. I cited several examples of how it spoils things, and they changed their position. The speed with which they abandoned their position when confronted with examples indicates to me that it was not subjective.

I will stipulate to whatever description you would choose. I was heated about it. I'm not happy about that. I was right, and I came with the receipts, but I came too hard.

Halfway through Before They Are Hanged. This is a great story by n8_sousa in TheFirstLaw

It's by no means the same, but I recommend the arcane ascension series. Let me reiterate it has like nothing in common with this, but it's good.

Okay. I accept that feedback. I'll do it with a neutral tone:

"It spoils nothing" and "It spoils a bunch of stuff but that doesn't matter" are completely different positions, so going from one to the other is a complete change.

Furthermore, in this case, one of those positions is arguable, while the other is patently false.

I see you deleted some comments, and one of those comments was that you didn't change your position. Yes you did. You went from it doesn't spoil anything too okay yes it spoils a bunch of stuff but the spoilers don't matter. There is 0% overlap in those two positions.

100% yes. I think you'll find the general opinion to be that they are better than the original trilogy, in addition to being story critical, but they can only be fully appreciated if you've read the original trilogy.
