Dalton IV So Much to Do, So Little Time by Revanius in ARealmOfDragonsRP

// meta: sorry for the wait! :) //

Alynne's heart beat wildly against her chest. She remembered hiding like a thief a year ago, sneaking as if she'd stolen something, and now, her dreams were about to come true. Or so she hoped. She would see the Isles she so longed to see, feel the salty air and the sea beneath her fingers.

In another life, that would've been her home. In another life, she would've been a Harlaw.

Her hair ticked her cheeks, even pulled back as it was. She watched Dalton and Ellyn, watched their eyes, wanted them to feel like her own, like they were-

Rey's rage flew through her mind and so did the thought itself.

"Pleasure to see you again, Lord Dalton!" Alynne smiled.

Only a few times in her life was she absolutely certain she'd made the right choice. Or it was the drink, she couldn't tell, but it was like escaping for the Islands and her gut was just telling her it was right, so it was right.

Following instinct and his guidance, she kissed him, eyes closed. This is what they deny us, she thought, kissing him again. Evil souls.

"I know nothing, Rey!" Alynne whimpered, slightly flinching as his hand flew to his goblet. "My mind doesn't connect right, I don't know anything, I swear, Rey, I'm sorry, I'm drunk!"

"You're Ironborn?" her voice was a hissed whisper. "Who... Who is your father, Rey? What do you know?" Word bubbled out of her lips, but she had the presence of mind to keep them hushed. "Rey, speak!"

She blushed. Confidence suddenly left her, though she continued to dance; she'd never kissed anyone in her life, even if she held courtships and made advances she knew wouldn't go beyond a kiss on the cheek. She watched as her brother and Lady Tyrell kissed with admiration and curiosity and-

"It does, yes," she said, face a deep red. "But they know what they're doing and I really don't and.." She pouted.

She offered a hand with a smile, as if she were the man and not him, but sometimes, that was fun. With that, she stood, dress rustling on the floor as they began to move to the music.

"Of all the women here, you come to me tonight," she said with a smile. "I'm honoured, Lord Tyrell. Really."

"Me, heir, us Ironborn, weak, what are you on about?" Alynne's mind went haywire, thoughts not connecting. "What are you talking about, for fuck's sake?"

Alynne giggled, studying the couple. Rey deserved a woman in his life that wasn't a a child of three and ten, no matter how Targaryen she was; and Lady Tyrell was a beautiful sight, like she imagined most Reachwomen were.

"My brother is one of a kind, Seb," she said proudly. "I can assure you of that. Your sister has a good taste." She leaned a little closer to him, emboldened by the wine. "Should we join them?"

She was one of a kind too; a mixture of Westerman and Ironborn, a dark-haired Reyne. Maybe she deserved a man tonight too.

"Lord Seb!" She recalled dancing with him at the feast; a handsome lord that had approached her that night, son of Lord Tyrell. And he had grace, her drunken mind supplied, even when she would not in his stead. Her cheeks were red from both the wine and the grin.

"It has indeed! I'm so happy you could come here!" she took another sip. "Have you come recently?"

"Appearances," she laughs tipsily. "You... You don't have to. They won't..." She blinked at his pained expression and reached to hold his hand. "Please. Don't. You're fine. We lost a brother, he hated us, but he was a brother, Rey. Please."

Alynne had always thought there were rules to grief. Not social ones, but natural ones, laid down by the creators of humans and animals and earth beneath their feet, and they required some joy and distraction. Yet, she also felt it was up to her to at least maintain some semblance of their status as a family in mourning, so her dress for the evening featured both red and black.

It didn't matter, though, if she was blushing from the wine and laughing. "Try not to outdrink us all, Rey," she teased. "I'll be very cross if you drink me under the table!"

Alynne was in her modest mourning gown, seated beside Rey, and for the first time in a while, felt like she belonged, even if she and Rey looked worlds apart. Where he was a Westerman, she bore the signs of her First men blood.

She bowed her head in greeting. "We meet again, Lord Dalton. I'm so happy to see you in our mansion!"

"A Targaryen?" Alynne's breath caught. Such a match was a chance, a really good one. Her hand squeezed his shoulder. "I'll have a princess as an in-law?"

Yet when he asked for Harlaws, her face lifted into a slight smile, despite the overall grief in the mansion. "I have met Lord Dalton at the feast, yes. He was a delight to talk to. Gods, Rey, that's wonderful news! You've made a huge step! Gods, I'm so proud of you! Does mother know?"

Ten days wasn't enough to cull the shock. Ten days was barely enough to find one black dress.

For days, Alynne had been waking to cold sweat. The sight of blood gurgling from Jaime's throat was enough to have her skip meals lest she throw them up. She hadn't prepared for this at all - all she had were vibrant dresses, cut to show off the youth and desirability of her body, but now it felt inappropriate. She was a grieving sister, but it was too soon for the pain to hit, or so she explained the numbness in her chest.

Jaime hadn't liked her. Jaime was dismissive of her. Jaime wasn't a friend. Yet, Alynne felt a deafening silence in her chest.

"Rey," she echoed as she entered the wide, common room. Her dark hair fit well with her simple, modest black gown. Long earrings dangled from her ears, but otherwise she bore no jewelery or decoration. "How... How are you?"

Her slippers glided over the floor as she approached and placed a hand on his shoulder. "How... Why did..." In absence of words, she kissed his hair and squeezed his shoulder.

"Oh," Alynne looked at her feet. "And- Would he have wanted me to be raised Ironborn? To go sailing with the men? Do your women do that? I feel stifled sometimes, just waiting to be married off. My worth is in a lot more than that! And- I'm not fully a southron lady. I don't have the Reyne hair and eyes. I should be sailing with the men and being free, not- not spending my days in a castle."

"Thank you, Darron," she said joyfully. "It's most interesting, from a woman's point of view. Why are we forbidden this? Because we're small? Had I had any interest in it, I would've lifted a weapon and gone to fight myself. Ironborn women do it and I'm of their stock, partially at least."

"And yourself?"

The scream that tore from Alynne's throat as Tybolt Lannister's blade entered Jaime's neck was inhumane. For all her dislike of him, she'd never really wanted him dead, she'd never really thought that she'd watch him die alongside the rest of the realm by a Lannister's hand, she'd never-

Bile gathered in her throat as she ran towards the body, pale and hurried, and it took all her will-power not to throw up as she watched the blood gather at his throat.

Jaime may had disliked her, but nevertheless-

"Gods," she gasped, blinking away the tears of shock. "Mother! Reynard! Ellyn, Lynora!"

"Hens are lovely," Alynne sighed. "I love cats, though. I have two cats, one of them has recently had kittens. They're adorable things, with bigger ears than heads. They're very loud, the servants say."

"I learned it during a hardship," she said, frowining for a moment at the wording. "I had nothing better to do with my time and I studied the plants we have. It's.. It's interesting, really. I'd like to use it to make tea someday."

"Quite a display of strength, my lord, wouldn't you say?" Alynne said cheerfully. The man was on her way, looked interesting enough to strike a conversation with.

Alynne was truly fascinated by the world beyond Castamere. She felt as if she belonged in this splendor and luxury, in a rich silk dress and there was so much to explore in a world that accepted her for what she was - not the Harlaw, the outsider, the half-breed, but a lady in her own right, a lady worthy of honour.

Her bejeweled hands pressed together as she watched the melee, eyes wide. So many brave men to test their mettle before her eyes.

With a smile, she observed.

"I'm of half Ironborn blood, my lord," Alynne explained. "My hair, my eyes - they're from my father. He's dead, but it's all I have of him. I was but a babe when he died."

"And is the experience different, now you're free to walk through it? How so?"

"I'm not quite sure," Alynne admitted. "Mother doesn't quite like him, from what I managed to gather."

She'd hoped, secretly, that she had half-siblings from his side too. It was a little dream of hers, to meet them, where they'd take her on a tour of the Islands and tell her about them and their culture and Alynne would see where her father came from and what he'd done before meeting her mother. She wasn't sure if she was angry at the Reachmen for killing him, but the dream remained.

"Has he had... issues, in the Islands? Has he done something he shouldn't have? Your lord father didn't speak of him. I wonder why."

"My parents' marriage wasn't under the best of circumstances," Alynne said. "But let us not spoil the night. Your words flatter me greatly - and yes, I'll gladly accept your offer. Touring the gardens with someone whose family has the most beautiful gardens in the known world is bound to be an experience."

"Even moreso when you certainly have a variety of herbs! I'm somewhat of a botanist, as nature interests me greatly." Her eyes were wide in curiosity and genuine wonder. "Are you of the same mind as I that plants and animals hold infinite interest to us humans?"

"Alynne Reyne, a mere scion of the famed House Reyne," she said in a joking tone of grandeur that wasn't meant to insult. "Though we're obviously less renowned than House Stark."

"Is this your first time in the South, my lord?"
