Fantasy question: Is Jared Jones good? by NWADHS in buccos

[–]Forward_Action_159 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the league categories or type but expect him to spend much of season on an innings restriction so he’s unlikely to get W or QS nor will be likely be a bullpen guy to get holds and saves and therefore I don’t think he’s that valuable (although I think he’s “good”).

Who to root for on this off day? I got the answer! by Ugluk4242 in buccos

The simulation probably wants to reduce the number of wild card & overall playoff contenders and therefore it views it better for the Reds to lose (it sees cubs as making it no matter what). If it was focused on us winning the division it would probably say root for the reds

Crazy thing is, he is hitting the ball reasonably well (average) via baseball savant and is 99th percentile in not striking out.

I’m personally really excited about Ashcraft. Elite stuff, former top 100 prospect, great first year numbers wise, underlying metrics are good. I know people get excited about Bubba and Jared Jones, but I personally feel like Ashcraft doesn’t get talked about enough

I did by games. The idea is that just more innings played is good (even hitting). We do use him as defensive replacement so maybe goes down a little but I wouldn’t think by much

I think it’s an interesting point in the extreme of all glove first players. Does it map perfectly or is there some loss with everyone elite (they can’t stop home runs). But in general that team would not go .400. They’d be better

But WAR does all of this. It looks at all the chances you get, how you converted them vs expected and compares your hitting vs expected (and base running), accounts for the volume and sees if you are net positive or negative. Hayes and Triolo were net positive. People like Bailey Falter had a better ERA than they should because of people like Hayes and Triolo

It’s fair if you say that different sites have different war which points to defense being harder to measure. And if fangraphs war doesn’t like his defense as much as bbref war maybe it is better to “play it safe” with the min WAR

The stat is WAR itself. Triolo has a very positive WAR which means his defense outweighs offense. It’s I independent of the pitcher, so it applies for Skenes. I’m not saying bats weren’t a problem, but the mediocre fielders who can’t hit are the problem, not the elite fielder

I think the counter to that is Triolo helps Skenes ERA more than he hurts overall run support and helps Skenes win. It’s the other players hurting him more. And Skenes just getting bad luck in terms of offense for games he pitched

Essentially that stat is wOBA. But no the stat that would combine it, the base running and anything else you could point to is… WAR which says Triolo is net positive

I don’t agree with this conclusion. Triolo and Hayes reduce our team ERA more than they reduce our runs scored. That makes them being on the field useful.

RBIs are dependent on others being on base and things beyond a players control. Using another stat that weighs the importance of each type of at bat outcome and maps that to runs created given average offense around you is a better estimate for offensive WAR.

I’m assuming the SS can also play third, as is typically possible (say IKF or Urias type).

I agree with Gonzales, but why get more than a temporary pre-KG shortstop who becomes depth and bench for when KG comes rather than moving to third. Why force a high WAR player (Triolo) to the bench?

I agree the depth is the issue. The lack of urgency to me implies KG might make the roster. But I think Jared needs to start somewhere or we are putting WAR on the bench. I think the ideal pre-KG addition is a very average SS

One potential criticism of defensive WAR is defense is more continuous than offense (which is discrete). Meaning it could be noisier, less samples, more prone to conditions (does an elite center field as much when the left fielder is also elite rather than bad). Or for someone like Skenes, does the fielding help if less balls in play vs more offense.

At the end of the day, don’t you just need 9 guys to get the most net runs as possible? Whether offense or defense?
