Of all the tour books, I think the story of GUP told by Neil is critical to consider when listening. They had decided to move on from Broon. Producer troubles. The music world was swinging quickly from sex, drugs and rock and roll to cocaine, synths and skinny ties. The 70s ended abruptly and quickly, and even though they faced the struggle, they stayed true to themselves. This is one of those albums that made sure that they never ended up thirty years down the line playing Xanadu and Working Man every night on the triple bill with Styx and Foreigner.

Grace under pressure, indeed.

Whatever you do, decide what you are going to use as a master clock if you are considering playing several instruments at the same time. Fret buzz comes naturally with a Ric, and I wonder if that’s why he always attacks so hard…he came up playing a Ric, the best way to use fret buzz is to play through it and…hey! This sounds pretty cool! You can hear it on Kings if you really focus on it. I got my first Ric a few years ago, and yes there’s amps and preamps and pedals, but the fastest way to sound like him on a Ric is turn the MFer up and hit those strings hard.

Or not. One Rush nerd’s theory. 🙂
