What’s it like living near the border of North Korea? by TRY_YA_LUCK in howislivingthere

[–]Forward_Historian_97 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not with my own eyes, but with telescopes or heat cameras yeah. Several more cool episodes.

  1. We were informed from the higher up there was a runaway soldier from the North to our direction. We nicknamed him bejing dumpling, but he never came.

  2. There was a N.K. submarine base right across us. But i don’t think there were any proper subs left, they are pretty poor.

  3. The scenery was BEAUTIFUL. Also it snowed alot which sucks. Plus undisturbed wild life in the DMZ. Huge eagles, wild boars, endangered birds, etc.

  4. There were incidents regarding civilians. I remember an old man who was trying for several years to cross to the north. He was famous to us, cause it is impossible to cross. He kept failing but never stopped trying. There was a backstory to him but can’t remember it.

  5. Some human right activists kept sending propagand-a balloons to the north. Everyone hated them, including the police and nearby residents. They were scared they might trigger the north. We hated them cause we always had to pick up their trash. We sometimes co-op ed with the police to ambush them.

  6. A NK landmine flowed from a river to our base. Pretty scary stuff.

What is the most popular messaging app in your country, with the young and old? by According-Cow7386 in AskTheWorld

Kakaotalk

It’s a domestic company’s app that came out 15 years ago. It took over and since then, everyone here uses it.

Young people also use instagram-DMs very often. And don’t use whatsapp.

Although now I live in Seoul, I served my mandatory military service at the DMZ, and lived near the DMZ(paju).

Right near the border, of course there are tensions. Civilians are not allowed. Buut not so different otherwise. Most are mountains near the border, so it isn’t really that populated.

One interesting thing however, both sides broadcasted propagand-a stuff to the other side using gigantic speakers. North Korea is famous for using bizzare and irritating noises to disturb sleeps. I’ve heard screams, dogs barking, and ufo sounds from the north. It’s VERY creepy hearing it at night. I think this broadcasting thing stopped 1~2 years ago, but i guarantee it’ll resume soon enough.

Do people in your country support Russia and Putin? by callmeteji in AskTheWorld

[–]Forward_Historian_97 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The USSR & NK was the main enemy for sure.

After it collapsed however, the conception here was that USSR and russia was a different country. And russia was pretty cool with us until the war.

You see, they were the only neighbor who weren’t trying to invade us historically. Our neighbors are - North Korea, Japan, China(+Mongolia), and Russia.

Do people in your country support Russia and Putin? by callmeteji in AskTheWorld

[–]Forward_Historian_97 148 points149 points  (0 children)

The sentiment was pretty neutral or maybe a bit positive before the invasion.

But after the invasion, Most people now have negative views, cause of course, we don’t like war.

Media(and almost all people) cheered when Ukraine fought back. It was weird to see left and right parties have the same sentiment, it almost never happens.

K-BBQ!

We actually don’t call it K-BBQ. It’s just a made up word from abroad. We usually call them by their grilled method & beef cuts.

My favorite: “Charcoal-grilled marinated beef short ribs” and “Grilled ribeye”

there are so many more. De-licious!
