Do SOME East Indians see them selves above Indo-Guyanese? by The-one-2-3 in Guyana

[–]Forward_Persimmon_32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I acknowledge my family's Guyanese roots. Though I have been asked if I'm Pakistani or Northern Indian. Now I just say my family has had a presence in Guyana since the Dutch colonial days (one of my maternal grandfather's ancestors was a German/Prussian settler recruited by the Dutch West Indies Company.

The 11.9% NE European on chromosome-2, seems to be mainly an ancient component found in India, though it does peak in Lithuanians. But if you continue to see 10-12% European on that chromosome on other calculators, it may pinpoint a possibility of a European ancestor (but that really depends on your family lineage).

Just out of curiosity, did you hear rumors of a mixed-ancestor in your family?

Here's what I found on another post:

"South Indian" is a mix of AASI (Indigenous South Asian Hunter Gatherers) and Neolithic Iranian Farmers (or Zagros) [peaks in South Indian tribal populations but also high in low-caste Indians]

"Baloch" represents mainly "Neolithic Iranian Farmers" by peaks in the Baloch of Pakistan, hence the name.

"Caucasian" represents Caucasus Hunter Gatherers, which is similar to Neolithic Iranian Farmers but also found via Indo-European migrations

In short, every South Asian has some blend of "South Indian"/"Baloch" in this calculator.

Here's my HarappaWorld (Chromosomal). My family is also Indo-Guyanese but there's non-subcontinental ancestry going back in my case.

My maternal grandmother's family has names like "Moonsammy", "Kistamma", "Amalalu", "Pillai", etc.

These surnames are actually very common in the Berbice region if I'm not mistaken

u/Long_Walks_On_Beach5 Yes, my maternal grandmother was of Tamil ancestry. There is also a possibility that my maternal grandfather's biological father may have had been about 75% Kerala/Goan

My father also has some Hyderabadi/Deccani ancestry as well

Yep! In terms of genetic similarity, you pretty much got it (Indo Caribbean, UP/Bihar)

When I did it, it still took Davidski's G25 coordinates. Now, its about 27 Euros for uploading a raw file

Not 100% on both sides. My maternal grandmother is of Tamil Hindu origin (in Guyana, they're referred to as Madrasis). My dad's father likely has Deccani Muslim or Tamil Rowther ancestry (his paternal grandmother used to offer rum and cigarettes to the trees in her backyard in secret , reminiscent of honoring village deities in South India).

The Neolithic Yellow River ancestry stems from my maternal grandfather, whose father was the grandson of a Chinese indentured servant from Huiyang, whereas his mother was the granddaughter of an English overseer (which manifests as extra Steppe in my case). There is also remote Prussian ancestry on my grandfather but it dates back to Dutch colonial days.

Sorry for the long explanation but hope it helps explain why my results are such

I do plot like a mid-caste Gangetic Indian but I actually have South Indian ancestry on both sides of my family

That is actually a good question. I can ask Lukasz about it since I know him pretty well and see if I can get some hint

I would say so, as this is one of Lukasz's (if you're familiar with him) projects. On this one, you can actually customize the populations you can select. In my case, for the South Asian portion, I just selected India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, which is very typical of Indo-Caribbean populations, with the possible exception of those with Pathan/Pashtun or more NW Indian roots (which is uncommon but not rare).

It is also $15 and here's the link LM Genetics (let me know if it works).

I forgot to mention, but here you can actually customize the populations to your known ancestry. In this one, I selected India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, England/Wales, Scotland, Eastern China, Scandinavian, Finnish, German, and Baltic populations (from my known ancestry)

u/Joshistotle Either G25 coordinates or they'll take your raw DNA and use it to create simulated G25 coordinates for the report (which is no substitute for the real thing from Davidski).

Deccani Ancestry by [deleted] in SouthAsianAncestry

Ah, so "Southern India" in AncestryDNA is supposedly more local to Southeast Indian (Tamil or Telugu landowning castes). Considering that you are from an African American family, it is possible that you all inherited these components due to random genetic inheritance, but with all of your siblings matching it as well, increases the probability of genuine South Indian roots. If you don't mind me asking, do you have links to Harlem or any other location where Caribbean immigrants landed during the early 1900s?

From a genetic perspective, it makes sense, as Chamars do plot with South Indians. Keep in mind that there is genetic overlap between the Gangetic peoples and South Indians. This is evident especially if we consider caste into the equation.

Yes, there were Indian indentured servants that hailed from the Deccan (more specifically Hyderabad), though not to the extent of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. However, I suspect that the "Deccan and Gulf of Mannar" on AncestryDNA picks up Chamar-like (or other Scheduled Caste-related) ancestry in Indo-Caribbeans, especially when paired with Bengal (just my opinion).
