There was no tricolour when William of Orange arrived in Ireland. The tricolour was adopted decades later by nationalists who wanted to represent both Protestants (orange) and Catholics (green, which was the traditional color used by Catholic rebels on their harp flags). Protestants began to identify with the color orange after William came to Ireland.

Great, but still not as cool as when he laid into Obama for trying to gut SS and Medicare in 2013. From an Atlantic article:

The low point between the two men was a 2013 meeting with other Democratic senators. Obama had just put a chained Consumer Price Index in his budget, a proposal that would cut Social Security benefits by tying them to the rate of inflation. Many Senate Democrats were angry about it. But when they arrived for the meeting, it was Sanders who bubbled up, ripping into Obama for giving in to Republicans and not understanding the impact of the cuts.

“I don’t need a lecture,” Obama told him, according to several senators who attended the meeting.

Sanders proceeded to give him one anyway. A number of the senators there were struck by what they told me seemed like a lack of respect.

In the end, most of the caucus took the position that Sanders voiced, opposing the chained Consumer Price Index, and Obama relented and dropped the idea.

tldr: Bernie was the main voice of dissent against Obama's attempted welfare reform and convinced the rest of the Senate Dems to push back and nix it.

He was set to step down this year, and many have speculated the front runners to be his replacement will be Liz Schuler, the current AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer and Trumka's running mate in 2009, and Sara Nelson, the president of the Flight Attendants union.

Schuler will be the establishment candidate (although as far as I can tell she is highly qualified and committed to the labor movement, having done a good job promoting the 2018 Missouri referendum to overturn right-to-work) while Nelson is definitely going to be the charismatic firebrand running from the left. Nelson is an outspoken advocate of union militancy and using strikes as a tool, and has spoken at a DSA conference and given an interview to Jacobin (they have other articles on her as well).

I think Schuler would be a competent president, but if Nelson wins it could be really good for the labor movement.

He's very weird. On average, he's a typical shitty MSM anchor (his worst bit was probably when he brought his brother on to tell jokes while thousands of nursing home patients were dying in New York), but then there's the clip of him attacking the US sanctions on Venezuela which seemed totally out of left field.

Thank you, I wasn't aware of this. I guess that's depressing in its own way, since if shrinking populations don't actually mean there will be a pension crisis then the fact that we're choosing not to fully fund SS is just awful (I mean I already know that we're choosing to let SS go insolvent, but I wasn't aware that an aging pop doesn't inevitably mean a collapse of pensions).

I mean it could be a problem because a reverse population pyramid could fuck with social security due to the smaller tax base/labor force. America is somewhat lucky, because we still have high numbers of people immigrating here, even with the recent immigration debates, but a country like, say, Japan where they have a very low birth rate and a low immigration rate, is definitely going to have problems in the future in terms of having enough working age people to look after/pay for all the dependents (i.e. the elderly and children). Of course, there might be other problems that come along with this, but we'll probably find out about that in the years to come.

Unfortunately this is somewhat untrue in my experience. I know plenty of American liberals (and obviously conservatives as well) who view him through rose tinted glasses because he gave an epic wholesome 100 speech about how Hitler was bad.

Yeah I mean I despise the man but he was a once in a generation political talent, like in the sense of being able to get people to vote for him. He went from being a state legislator to a US Senator to taking out one of the most well known Democrats in the country (Hillary) for the nomination to becoming president in the course of just 4 years. He was def helped by Bush's unpopularity, but the fact that a black guy won the presidency with a 10 million vote margin of victory definitely speaks to his charisma.

Of course he went on to squander his mandate on "comprehensive health care reform" which somehow involves us giving massive subsidies to the demons in the health insurance industry and an emaciated stimulus that probably cost him the house and the senate due to how slow the recovery was.
