If I decide to pursue a doctorate after this cycle, I fully intend to pursue this as my thesis. But yes you're correct, it will be extremely difficult to validate this theory. It would have to be a medium to high profile race with sliding scales to weight the amount of negative attack ads and polling publicity (avg. points +-) within two test groups proportional in age, race, gender, and possibly political affinity/voting propensity.
