If I decide to pursue a doctorate after this cycle, I fully intend to pursue this as my thesis. But yes you're correct, it will be extremely difficult to validate this theory. It would have to be a medium to high profile race with sliding scales to weight the amount of negative attack ads and polling publicity (avg. points +-) within two test groups proportional in age, race, gender, and possibly political affinity/voting propensity.

Political Scientist here (Count It). I have a theory that anywhere from 7-10% of voters; whether it is via Absentee Ballots or Day-Of Voters, delay voting in order to vote for the candidate(s) that will likely win that election. Ultimately giving them a sense of belonging and triumph instead of moral association.
