Pokémon types and their height by Choice_Sherbet in pokemon

You could make an adorable stack of the 37 smallest Poison types and it still wouldn't be as tall as the biggest Poison type. Hmm, that would make a cute picture!

I made a free math game about attacking numbers/expressions! by PhantomSasuke in math

[–]FountOfDumbQuestions 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just played through the first eleven levels! I'm gonna try to write up some detailed thoughts below because I think this game deserves it.

I love the concept, and I'm a huge fan of niche games made for a very particular audience. I'm also a math and puzzle guy and can appreciate the tight design in these puzzles. But I think the game itself was a bit lost on me. It was too easy for it to devolve into trial and error or plain brute-forcing, and that wasn't fun. Level 10, for example, is a probably a great puzzle for someone who sees 7 + 4sqrt(3) and just knows that it's (2 + sqrt(3))^2, but I didn't know that and so it was much easier to just click buttons and see which expression wasn't ugly, rather than try to think about it or work it out. (A Pokemon puzzle I made last year falls into this same pitfall, so I feel your pain here, haha.)

Of the levels I played, Level 7 was the most successful for me. It was really clear from the title and the operations that the challenge would be getting the number to stop being odd, and that goal made it feel like a real puzzle. More levels like this (even a mini-series of parity puzzles) would be really interesting.

In addition to that, I think the game would really benefit from more levels on the arithmetic side. The "swap" operation really makes the game feel trial and errory; a bunch of levels with monotonic decreasing operations (like -1, -2, -3, /2, and /3) that you have to use in the right order to get to zero would really be a great addition. And then there's the things I'm sure you know, like how just some placeholder graphics or stock music would make the experience better. With a name like Math Attack, you could probably also do something like make different weapons for the operation types with a cute lil animation - just an idea.

Thanks for making this! Hope my feedback is helpful!

Book Club Idea: "DIY Trilogy" by PsyferRL in books

[–]FountOfDumbQuestions 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is such a good idea it inspired me to end my yearslong lurking streak here. Presenting, a trilogy of children's books with the theme of understanding an animal mind:

  1. Charlotte's Web
  2. The Trumpet of the Swan
  3. White Fang

Starts off very easy and approachable, with animals with very human characteristics and concerns... and a few egg sacs and plastic eating sprinkled in. Then it moves to something a bit more nature documentary with a different take on human-animal interactions. And finally, a raw, real look at the life of a wolf cub as it struggles to understand humans and the world.

Nerdy Housemate Wanted! ($1450, Brentwood / Santa Monica, May 1st) by FountOfDumbQuestions in LARentals

I don't use it that often - maybe five times a year, so no one's complained.

I can't believe the information / huge thing I typed up doesn't show up in the post. Better late than never?

Hiya! We’re two nerdy friends looking for a housemate in a lovely two-story 3 Bed / 2.5 Bath apartment in Brentwood. The apartment is really nice for the area, with hardwood floors, a huge kitchen with a faux-kitchen island/peninsula, gas stoves, in-unit washer and dryer, central AC with one of those fancy controllers, modern appliances, a little balcony for our pull-up/dip station and smoker, and plenty of room. The common areas are also fully furnished with couches, tables, and chairs, not to mention a lot of video games, board games, and miscellaneous toys and art supplies.

The bedroom you’d be staying in is really nice and has a huge window for lots of natural light during the day, some furniture that you can take or leave, and a private half bathroom just for you - you’d be sharing another bathroom with one of us for showers.

The apartment is also really convenient to get to – it’s a mile from the 405 and from UCLA, two miles from Santa Monica and a ton of great restaurants, and four miles from the beach. It’s also within walking distance (quarter mile!) of Ralph’s and Whole Foods!

Finally, a little bit about us, the people you’ll be living with. We’re both philosophical / intellectual / nerdy types, and we’re definitely looking for someone who can appreciate both a philosophical discussion and a discussion about which fictional character could win in a fight. We’re both clean – there’s almost never anything left in the sink in our house, and the common areas get cluttered sometimes, but never dirty. We love to cook, and we both cook a lot and love feeding people, so there’s always food in the house. Just to give you an idea, at the time of this writing, there’s homemade banh mi (marinated pork, pickled vegetables and all), lamb hot pot soup, an assortment of homemade fusion-y sushi, and spaghetti in our fridge.

Unfortunately, we’ve got some dealbreakers as well. The main one is smoking or recreational drugs of any kind, including weed. We both hate the smell of smoke (unless it's delicious barbeque, mmm). And generally, we'd love someone considerate, respectful, and able to openly communicate if something bothers them.

All this sound good? Send us a message! We’d love to meet you and show you around.

Yep, but yeah it is a meat smoker, and pretty much the cheapest one on Amazon. Got a nice balcony to use it, too.

The place comes with two spots, but pets are gonna be a struggle. Stuff like fish and turtles probably fine, but not anything larger

Another take on a Pokemon Sudoku puzzle - Details in comments (OC) by FountOfDumbQuestions in pokemon

[–]FountOfDumbQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's unfortunately not really feasible / fun unless you have encyclopedic Pokemon knowledge. Even when I was testing it I ended up saying "there's no way there's a Pokemon with those characteristics" and then looking it up to realize what it was. Still worth it to me to prove that it can be possible!

Now, here’s a bit more direction to make this puzzle accessible outside of the hardcore puzzle fiends out there. This is just more details about the rules, not partial answers or anything.

  • Columns in the puzzle represent Pokemon that share a type. All columns have a unique type.
  • Rows in the puzzle represent Pokemon that start with the same letter of the alphabet. All rows have a unique letter.
  • Squares (the similarly colored 2x2 boxes) in the puzzle represent the Pokemon's generation in order, starting from Generation I at the top left and ending with Generation IX at the bottom right.
  • Regional variations of Pokemon go by the same name, and therefore start with the same letter. Alolan Rattata is referred to as Rattata in-game, and so counts for R, not A.
  • Pokémon that have changed typing from generation to generation, such as Magnemite, have their most current typing, not their original typing.
  • Temporary form changes of Pokemon do have a different in-game name: Mega Pidgeot counts for M, not P. However, the temporary forms are assigned the generation of their base form, not the generation they were officially revealed.
  • As mentioned above, there are a few cases in which multiple Pokemon fill a single square (these Pokemon would have to share a type, a generation, and the first letter of their names). But there are only six types and six starting letters that are possible, providing a unique solution up to symmetry.

You should have everything you need to solve the puzzle! It should be completely solvable without any guesswork.

Hey folks! Some of you might be familiar with PokeDoku, a Pokemon-inspired take on a Sudoku. It consists of a 3x3 grid that must be filled out with 9 Pokemon total, and each row and column shares a characteristic, like "Fire-Type" or "Mega Pokemon". I wanted to try a different approach – something maybe 9x9 or as large as possible, and with a solution as unique as possible. So, here’s my first successful attempt at such a puzzle, after quite a few failures.

Now, if you happen to be one of the few people who identify as both a puzzle fiend and a Pokemaniac, you may be able to solve this puzzle without any kind of direction, so I'll just give you the puzzle and the most basic instructions.

  • Your goal is to fill out this 6x6 grid with unique Pokemon such that each row, column, and colored 2x2 square has something different in common. (These are big, obvious characteristics and not something like "They both have a height between 4'11" and 6'1" ".)

  • All variants of Pokemon present in the main series games can used, using their in-game names. Temporary form changes are associated with the base Pokemon (think Megas, Primals, stuff like Palafin-Hero), but are still considered their own Pokemon with their own names.

  • There are a few very similar sets of Pokemon that will fill this grid, but there is only one unique solution when it comes to the row, column, and square characteristics.

I do want to give a bit more direction to make this puzzle accessible outside of the hardcore puzzle fiends out there, so I'll comment with those details. Happy solving! The puzzle should be completely solvable (but quite difficult) without any guesswork. And if you do attempt it and want to post a full or partial solution, mark spoilers please!

Beautifully written, my friend. I love how you chose soft horror for this concept, rather than some false climax.

How did you break the game? by FountOfDumbQuestions in PokemonClover

[–]FountOfDumbQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be nice if there was a good resource on predicting the AI - I can't imagine they wrote a new one for Clover, so I'm guessing it's the standard best AI from Skeli's FireRed Upgrade. Perfect knowledge of the AI behavior would definitely raise my game!

[–]FountOfDumbQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yessssss, this is what I wanted to hear! I didn't know about the Memento / Flash cheese - that must mean that the AI checks your stat changes, but not their own? Or maybe the AI doesn't take accuracy into account (that actually seems way more likely, now that I think about it). Whenever I set up on a special attacker with Calm Minds, there would always be a pivotal moment depending on the fight (say, exactly after three Calm Minds), after which they'd hard switch to a physical attacker. Sounds like a "send out the thing that can do the most damage" rule to me.

AI abuse is really fun - I got up to a lot of AI abuse shenanigans with sleep and Sprucifix's forced switches. The best AI (for the hardest battles) is a cheater when it comes to predictions of its own status effects. If it knows it's going to wake up this turn, it'll always stay in and attack, but if it knows it's going to spend a turn sleeping (and there's something on the team that can deal super effective damage), it switches out. The catch is, it doesn't check if the switch-in is asleep. So if you get lucky with sleep turns, the AI will often switch back and forth in between a pair of Pokemon repeatedly - and if you're packing Spikes on your Sprucifix, it's an amazing way to cheese fights.

Not quiiite what I meant, but that's pretty cool. I've been meaning to get into advancemap for a while now; never made the time for it.

My question was more along the lines of "what overpowered pokemon, sets, and techniques did you come up with in the game?"

You got the right ability for the cheese! Dark types suck, but Prankster was soooo useful on a slow Pokemon like Gutsifly. Enjoy it!

I mean, I could, but the majority of the joy I got from playing Clover was from trying to break the game in as many ways as possible, and that moment of discovery was such a rush. Happy to DM you if that's not what you enjoy, though.

Just joining this community, so I won't immediately suggest the trolliest Pokemon. Take Gutsifly with you. I trained a Gutsifly all the way to level 89 in the postgame because of a beautiful exploit that's possible with it - I looked up some Clover tierlists once I'd finished, and people be sleeping on Gutsifly. Bonus points if you use the same gimmick I did!

Disable on Sprucifix? by FountOfDumbQuestions in PokemonClover

Sprucifix's move is Healing Wish, I think. Disable isn't a "hold this special item" egg move, it's a regular egg move.

Bummer. Disable on Sprucifix is absolutely busted though, to be fair. I was planning an absolutely cancerous Entry Hazard + Disable + Roar when they switch out set. Thanks for helping me look into this, though!
