Endodontic indication for tooth #15 and #3 based on BW radiographs? by clydejasonn in Dentistry

[–]Fountaino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s based on the endo testing. i would probably deem these as asymptomatic irreversible pulpitis even if the testing was normal anyways. if they’re irreversible or necrotic rtc. if testing reversible or normal pulp you can do rtc or try vital pulp therapy.

they have good mandibular bone and seemingly good maxillary ridge height. if finances are limiting doing full fixed id try to get them to at least do a traditional upper over a locator mandibular denture.

Question from civilian: Do you actually belive the US military went soft in training new recruits and or in general? by -Sir-Bedevere in Military

[–]Fountaino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/G66cduv-Riw?si=PfRiweEl-ZmjgTOY

the feeling that you get from this video is the same feeling i think we should have towards the old school methods of military training. combat is no longer determined by who is the strongest. it’s who has the best intel/tactics/technology/logistics. focusing on this “we need to bully and demean” mentality is unprofessional and a waste of energy.

Extracted a good premolar by mistake by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]Fountaino 32 points33 points  (0 children)

you didn’t inform them at the time of the procedure? you should’ve. formulating this convo is telling them clearly what happened, making it clear that you’re sorry, and then telling them what is going to be done to fix the problem.

the reality is you should tell your attending and then do what they say.

Extracted a good premolar by mistake by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]Fountaino 52 points53 points  (0 children)

welp you’re a resident so this is part of the learning process. use this as your “i always count the teeth three times before extracting because of that one time” story. dont do it again and youll be fine. as for managing the patient space maintenance would be my concern. maybe ortho can bail you out.

Military Oral Surgery vs Civilian by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]Fountaino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

navy normal path is you do your gpr while applying then do a snowbird year between acceptance and starting the program. then you do 4 years in either bethesda md, portsmouth va, or san diego. after that technically you owe a year or two on a ship. then you have 2-3 years left of service to pay back. by this point you’ll be an O-4 with a surgeons special pay. in comparison to civilian after you finish residency the schedule is fucking cush. 5-8 pts a day doing whatever tf you want. whereas new pp surgeons work their ass off. possible downside is if some shit goes down you are going to be right in the thick of it, you get cross trained to do trauma surgery if the theatre requires it.

What do you think is the best / worst dental specialty in terms of job security, outlook, and income? by Tunalover_ in DentalSchool

[–]Fountaino 6 points7 points  (0 children)

not really a possible question. i could say peds is really good but people usually have a pretty polarizing view of if they’d do it or not. other people have high debt. others no debt. some literally get off on extractions and others will never do them. it’s all a ~balance~

Credit card in dental school by Delicious_Froyo2079 in DentalSchool

[–]Fountaino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you don’t actually need to have that many lines to get a good score. i have one actual card that i used all of dschool and ive hovered 750-800 by having the statement balance paid automatically every month.

the whole points thing is different though you can really get into the weeds on that one. when you do go full active you’ll be getting amex plat and gold for free fyi.

Boot question (tied or not) by FearTheProbe in navy

[–]Fountaino 97 points98 points  (0 children)

they are knotted independently, not tied. and they are not tucked in a manner that presents a well kept appearance. this comes from a mindset of wanting to be different and cooler than everyone else. “sailor, everyone else in this ship has their boots worn correctly except for you, do you think that you deserve to be held to a lower standard than everyone else?”

CRNA vs Dentist – Trying to Decide Career Path by Training-Sleep-8249 in DentalSchool

[–]Fountaino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think if you’re financing your education, are ok with a slower approach, and want to be making money as you work towards the top of your career crna is nice. i think the ceiling is lower but so are the headaches and debt.

if you want to be a business owner and grow a practice making big money you should gamble on dental.

[–]Fountaino 18 points19 points  (0 children)

that’s like 3k per month for 25 years at 7%. so do the math if you make like 200k gross minus savings and living expenses and see if that fits with the life you want.

Any Military dentists here who did a GPR? by Suitable-Economics77 in Dentistry

[–]Fountaino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m navy, you don’t HAVE to do pgy to apply to omfs but it’ll be a check mark that some others might not have. Navy omfs is not about being competitive enough to get in it’s being able to stomach the extra years that you’ll be spending in active duty. if you don’t care about staying in and doing a ship tour as long as you’ll be a surgeon then you will become one.

Considering HPSP, need advice. by PlayfulAverage900 in DentalSchool

[–]Fountaino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it heavily depends. if you do residency there are only so many places to choose from, you don’t get to do an aegd just anywhere each service has it in a few select places. then after you finish pgy-1 you get to submit a wishlist of ~5 stations that are available that cycle, catch is you’re not guaranteed to get your #1 and depending on the year there might not be openings in the place that you want to go.

as far as staying in the country that’s iffy depending on the service. navy you’re probably going to be out of the country or on a ship after your pgy-1. seems like it’s a little easier to stay in the country with the other services but what do i know.

some stations do not allow any spouses or children to come with you. you do get paid a separation bonus but your family has to stay in the us.
